SGU Learns To Work With What It's Got: Rancors And Gates

SGU has finally let go of that magic reset button, and we couldn't be happier about it. This Friday's episode, "Lost," contained a lot of goodness, paired with plenty of potential. Now if only they could rethink their flashback hairstyles.

I was generally pleased with this episode of SGU. Sure it had its flaws and wacky nonsensical character scenarios, but overall there was a lot of good here.

      Stargate Cloverdale

Actor Jamil Walker Smith, who plays Sgt. Ronald Geer, in a scene from an upcoming episode of Stargate Universe, season two, filmed on location in Cloverdale.

TV’s critically acclaimed sci-fi drama, Stargate Universe, beamed down to Earth this week.

The U.S.-Canadian production spent two days filming on location in Cloverdale’s historic downtown core, shooting scenes inside – and outside – the Clova Cinema and other local landmarks.

Traffic was barred from the 5700 block of 176 Street for much of Tuesday, while the crew filmed a stunt sequence and other scenes.

The futuristic show, now shooting its second season, follows a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians trapped aboard the ancient alien spacecraft “Destiny” at the other end of the universe.

        STARGATE UNIVERSE "Sabotage" Episode 16

        Video trailer plus photos

        http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/show...s-ming-na.html

'SGU' sneak peek: 'Sabotage' challenges Ming-Na

Written by Barbara Marshall and directed by Peter DeLuise, "Sabotage" picks up where last week's "Lost" left off: Scott (Brian J. Smith), Chloe (Elyse Levesque) and Eli (David Blue) are stranded on some planet in a galaxy that the Destiny is about leave. If Rush (Robert Carlyle) can't get the ship out of FTL and turned around, they could be lost forever.

As you can see in the clips here, the Destiny and its crew have another pressing issue: They are under attack and possibly about to be boarded by--hmm--those skinny blue aliens maybe?

But those aren't even the groundbreaking part of this episode. That comes when Camile Wray (Ming-Na) agrees to use the communications stones with an expert in the field of hyper drives, a scientest named Amanda Perry (Kathleen Munroe) who has had past dealings with Rush.

From Stephen James Snyder at Techland

Coping With LOST Letdown: May We Suggest Stargate Universe?

I'm one of the few people in the Techland universe who never quite cared about Lost. That e-mail address is [email protected], by the way, if you want to fire off those angry notes. But before you hit send, allow me to present you with an idea for how to tend to that Lost withdrawal. The next show you should plunge into is effectively Lost set in space. I've been watching it all season, and I must admit that I've gotten hooked by the thing. It's called Stargate Universe, and if you've never watched a Stargate TV series, never fret; neither had I prior to this. Sure, I saw the 1994 film, but this was the first Stargate Syfy series I gave a try. And now I must admit: I look forward to the episodes. I appreciate the mystery. I respect the craftsmanship. This is one of my favorite TV shows right now.

Clearwater actor is flying high on 'Stargate'
By Walt Belcher Walt Belcher, Tampa Tribune, Fla.

Jun. 11--The first season of the sci-fi adventure series "Stargate Universe" winds up at 9 tonight on the Syfy network with a cliffhanger and another good performance by Clearwater's David Blue, who plays the resident geek Eli.

Blue, who grew up in Florida, is already working on a second season of 20 episodes being filmed in Vancouver.

Eli has become a fan favorite on this latest incarnation of a time-traveling saga that began with the 1994 "Stargate" feature film and continued with the long-running TV series "Stargate SG-1" and a spinoff, "Stargate Atlantis."

Blue, who went to Safety Harbor Middle School, Countryside High and the University of Central Florida, has gone from guest actor on TV shows such as "Ugly Betty" "Scrubs," "Veronica Mars," "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody" and "Moonlight" to being a star at sci-fi and comic book conventions.

Not about SGU but an interview with the new writer/producer Remi Aubuchon about his work on Persons Unknown where Stargate is mentioned.

                    http://www.collider.com/2010/07/05/e...rsons-unknown/

Is there something specific that attracts you to the sci-fi/mystery genre?
                    .
                    .
                    .
.....And, I have made a conscious choice to stay in this genre area, and yet, at the same time, try to always be working on ideas that are very character and human based. “Stargate Universe” is an example of that. More than the other “Stargate” franchises before it, this is really a character drama that happens to be utilizing the “Stargate” mythology. I’ve also got a couple future projects that I’m working on that are along the same lines as that. Right now, I’ll just take my chances because I just really love writing that stuff.

What is your involvement with “Stargate Universe”? Are you on that as a writer?

Remi: I’m on it as a writer and a consulting producer. I’ve always liked that show, and I was happy that they were looking for an extra person. It seemed like a good match. I’m having a blast.

Edit: Obviously the wrong thread to post this in

                            http://io9.com/5651571/with-season-2...id-to-go-there

With season 2, Stargate Universe is finally unafraid to "go there"
Last season of Stargate Universe left us wanting. We wanted more risks, character growth, and Young. Thankfully, the second season opener seems to have raised the bar for SGU: it's finally delivering (some) of the gritty space opera it promised.
"Intervention" started right where SGU left off; Telford, Kiva, Chloe and TJ have all been shot, Scott and Greer are stuck outside on the ship desperately trying to hide from the radiation rays, and Young and his military men are being held at gun point. It's still bloody chaos aboard Destiny. Which is perfect, as it matches the rapid pace which ended this series last season.

                            Stargate Universe: Intervention – Review
                            By Tom Powers • September 29, 2010
STARGATE UNIVERSE hasn’t been an easy-to-like television series. The producers, perhaps bored with the engaging and competent characters of STARGATE SG-1 and ATLANTIS, decide to give us a ship full of frightened, angry people, most of them seeming totally unfit or incapable of dealing with their situation. The only “first-string player” was Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle) — and he’s unpredictable, obsessive, somewhat misanthropic, probably untrustworthy, and quite possibly cracked.

                            -------------------------
                            http://airlockalpha.com/node/7854/%E...ervention.html

                            Stargate: Universe’ – Intervention
The Destiny crew and Lucian Alliance battle it out for ultimate control in the Season 2 premiere
                            What Worked
The level of excitement and conflict remained high throughout the show. Even with the quieter moments with TJ and Caine, there still was a sense that something wasn’t quite right. In some ways, it doesn’t feel as if the show ever left, and that shows good continuity on the part of the writers, the cast, and the crew.
The special effects still remain some of the best of the whole “Stargate” franchise. Also, the music is always great in adding to the emotional weight of the show. All in all, the entire episode should please “SGU” fans as well as possibly attract new viewers.
                            What Didn’t Work
It is always a risk to kill off major characters. However, when writers and show creators take that risk, the payoff comes in more of an emotional investment in the show by the audience as well as a level of uncertainty that is good to build in order to keep the audience on its toes.
The fact that only Kiva and TJ’s babies were the two major casualties is a little weak. It’s too bad that Kiva’s gone since Rhona Mitra is such a strong actress. Also, it’s understandable not to have a baby onboard, but it would have added some interesting storylines and issues. The episode felt like it tied up all of its loose ends a little too well.

                            -----------------------------
                            http://www.craveonline.com/entertain...vention-113077

                            STARGATE UNIVERSE 2.01 'Intervention'
                            Breakdown:
The previous episode was the best installment of this series to date. While this one wasn't quite as strong, it was still a pretty solid opening for the second year.
However, the alien planet scenes with T.J. felt like a giant dramatic misstep. On any other series, it could be pretty easily dismissed as just a vision; especially since T.J. doesn't seem to actually physically travel to the planet. But going into pseudo-religious territory is a dubious idea at best. When "Battlestar Gallactica" went in that direction, it didn't exactly work out in the end. "Stargate Universe" has definitely felt inspired by "BSG" at times, but this might be taking it a step too far. Things are interesting enough on the Destiny without this.
                            ------------------------

                            http://www.mania.com/stargate-univer...le_125450.html

                            Intervention
After showing marked improvement in the last half of the first season, Stargate Universe slips back a bit for the beginning of the second: not enough to erase its hard-won progress, but enough to remind us that the show could still use some polishing. We left the crew in the hands of the Lucian Alliance last year, with Colonel Young (Louis Ferreira) and most of the crew held captive while the invaders tried to take control of the ship. Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle) has a plan to use the radiation from a nearby pulsar to force the Alliance to surrender, but he has to overcome a few obstacles first… like the fact that it will kill his people just as readily as the bad guys.

Stargate Universe was a bleak view of the future

TV review: Lines with heavy meaning and pregnant pauses are flavour of the day in Stargate Universe, with a bleak mood that leaves the perky opener behind.

Yet for all that, there’s no denying the post-Apocalyptic intensity whipped up by Jesus-haired Robert Carlyle and his legion of fellow survivors, who deserve a medal for not bumping into things given that all the action takes place in a blue-tinged twilight that suggests the end of the world is nigh. The mood is relentlessly bleak – the perky jokiness of season one’s opener is a distant memory – but somehow that ties in perfectly with the mood of the moment. We’re all doomed! Er, till next week…

'Stargate Universe' exclusive: Haig Sutherland and the life of Riley

As far as he knows, Haig Sutherland is done walking through the gate room set of "Stargate Universe."

"You can't ask for anything better in a science fiction show than a good death," the Canadian actor told me recently. "If the red shirt fits, then you've got to wear it, right?"

The red shirt--a reference to how anyone dressed in a red shirt in the original "Star Trek" series was killed off--was metaphorically worn by Sutherland's "SGU" character in Episode 2.02, "Aftermath."

In classic SGU fashion, this new episode of Season 2 picks up right after the events of the season premiere exploring the “aftermath” of the events, leaving more people on board, Col. Young and TJ facing the reality of their dead child and dealing with it in different ways, a new group of survivors causing rise for concern as well.

The thing I love about SGU and always have, is a different way of telling the story and exploring the universe than its predecessors, with it’s ability to build on top of itself without weakening the foundation it set in the beginning. Survival is always the number one theme of these characters and this episode

                              STARGATE UNIVERSE “Aftermath” Review

was really hoping they wouldn’t do this so soon. The point of STARGATE UNIVERSE, like the prayer says, is coping with things you can not change. Now they did hint at the fact Rush’s brain can’t handle the stress of the massive information and will likely kill him or force him to have the information removed thus preventing him from controlling the ship completely. I’m okay with that bit of cheese, because it means the show can continue on point. And there is precedence for that to boot. O’Neill from SG-1 had the same problem when he encountered a similar knowledge-injection device.
