First ad for SGU was on Skiffy's awful "Sea Beast" movie tonight. "Sneak peek" during Ark of Truth/Continuum airings, 3/27 and 4/3. For those interested, the lettering of 'SGU' (that's all they showed) was gray.

CARLYLE REVEALS WHY THIS IS THE DARKEST STARGATE

Stargate Universe's scientist, the talented Robert Carlyle, explains how some deadly decisions help to make SGU the darkest Stargate of them all. Plus, find out who'll be filling our crucial Gate-banter void. Spoilers ahead!

We were excited to catch up with Robert Carlyle, the eldest castmember of the new Stargate Universe clan, at the Sci Fi Channel Upfronts. Thankfully, this seasoned actor spared a few moments to set us straight about SGU — turns out it's full of death and darkness and a very funny David Blue.

We know so little about your character. What else can you tell us?
I play Dr. Nicholas Rush. He's a scientist. He's a little bit in his mind, but he has his reasons, which will remain secret for the moment. I guess what makes this Stargate different from the previous shows in the franchise is, it's a lot darker than the other ones. This has less to do with interaction with an alien race and more about survival on the ship itself.

At the Sci Fi Upfronts: Battlestar Finale, New Shows and a New Name

              Mar 17, 2009

              by Erin Fox

Sci Fi chose their upfront event to screen the much-anticipated finale of their hit series Battlestar Galactica, introduce new shows and formally reveal their new name, SyFy.

Here are some of the highlights of the evening:

              Stargate Universe

Robert Carlyle told TVGuide.com that the network's third installment of the Stargate franchise was much darker than its predecessors, but assured us the show will have the audience hooked immediately. "There are three deaths and a suicide within the first few hours." When we asked if he thought the show's tone was influenced by the success of Battlestar Galactica, he said, "I would hope so. It's such a magnificent piece of work. ... I think [Universe] is very, very well written. ... It's certainly about survival. I think this is the point where (executive producer) Robert Cooper has said, 'We've done a lot of alien stuff, so let's concentrate on people.'"

Since the 1994 movie "Stargate," the franchise has grown and grown.

The newest in the series will shoot in New Mexico, a TV show called "Stargate: Universe." It was brought here by David S. Greathouse, a producer who worked in New Mexico on "To Live and Die" and "St. John of Las Vegas."

"It's otherworldly, so I said let's go to New Mexico," Greathouse told the Journal.

Stargate Universe's Robert Carlyle reveals new episode details

                    By Ian Spelling
                    ON 03/18/09

Robert Carlyle, star of the upcoming SCI FI Channel original series Stargate Universe, told SCI FI Wire that the show will be more character-driven and feature fewer aliens than its Stargate predecessors. (Spoilers ahead!)

Stargate Universe follows the adventures of explorers who start off on a reconnaissance mission to the Destiny, a ship built by the Ancients, only to wind up on a never-ending mission when the crew learns the ship can't return to Earth. The Destiny, her crew in tow but not actually in control of the ship, then traverses the universe, bringing them in contact with new worlds and various races, as well as potential allies and enemies.

SCI FI Wire caught up with Carlyle at SCI FI Channel's upfront presentation for advertisers and the media on Monday in New York. The Scottish actor, whose credits include Eragon and 28 Days Weeks Later, spoke excitedly about Stargate Universe, which will premiere later this year and also stars Justin Louis, Brian J. Smith, Alaina Huffman, David Blue, Ming-Na and Lou Diamond Phillips. Following are edited excerpts from our exclusive interview ...

March 20, 2009 - Battlestar Galactica may be coming to an end tonight, but for the SCI FI… uh, SyFy Channel, it's always onward and upward. So even as the network bid farewell to Galactica in New York City with various special events this week, they were also promoting their upcoming new series. That would include Stargate Universe, the second live-action spin-off of the popular franchise that is scheduled to debut later this summer.

IGN caught up with series star Robert Carlyle (24: Redemption) for a quick chat about Universe.

I'm looking forward to SGU, but Stargate has always been sort of a guilty pleasure for me. I'm not sure if I'm ready for a "serious" Stargate show possibly influenced by the "go darker" trend brought on by the success of shows like Battlestar and movies like The Dark Knight. What do you think?

The great Scottish actor Robert Carlyle was standing more or less by himself at the party after Sci Fi Channel’s upfront song and dance last week (March 16). I’m a fan of many of his projects - Hamish Macbeth; Begbie in Trainspotting; The Full Monty and his early, epic U.K. TV appearance as a football fan turned deranged killer in Robbie Coltrane’s Cracker.
