An actor twittered that a scene was shot in a bar. She said the singer was good, but the scene was 'teen drama' However, putting in songs is appealing to a younger audience.

The Sci Fi Channel has lined up guest stars for its upcoming series "SGU: Stargate Universe."

... Four veterans of the "Stagate" franchise, Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks and Gary Jones, will reprise their roles in guest stints.

.. Grammy-nominted Janelle Monae will play herself and will perform with her band two songs from her latest album, "Many Moons" and "Sincerely."

Carlo Rota will play Carl Strom, head of the International Oversight Advisory, the civilian oversight committee that heads up the Atlantis expedition and all funding.

Men, Coop and Brad are scared ****less that angry SGA fans won't back their new project if they resort to such schemes... Neither SG-1, nor SGA had to resort to something like this in their first season...

Series Premieres in October 2009 With a Two-Hour Special


NEW YORK – April 15, 2009 – SCI FI Channel rounds out its stellar cast of the highly anticipated drama-adventure series, SGU: Stargate Universe with an array of celebrity guest stars, set to make appearances throughout the season including, Richard Dean Anderson, Christopher McDonald, Grammy® nominated recording artist, Janelle Monáe, Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks, Gary Jones and Carlo Rota. The new original one-hour series stars Robert Carlyle, Lou Diamond Phillips and Ming-Na. Produced by MGM Television, the series is currently in production in Vancouver, BC and is set to premiere on SCI FI in October 2009 with a special two-hour episode.

Edgier and younger in tone, SGU will take the franchise in a dynamic new direction, appealing to longtime Stargate fans and first-time viewers alike. The two-part premiere of Universe is being directed by Andy Mikita (Stargate Atlantis, Stargate SG-1) and lensed by Rohn Schmidt (The Shield, The Mist). The series also stars Alaina Huffman, Justin Louis, David Blue, Jamil Walker Smith and Brian J. Smith.

SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth. Faced with meeting the most basic needs of food, water and air, the group must unlock the secrets of the ship's Stargate to survive. The danger, adventure and hope they find on board the Destiny will reveal the heroes and villains among them.

Guest Stars Include:

Richard Dean Anderson (Stargate SG1, Stargate Continuum, Stargate Atlantis) Anderson reprises his role as General O'Neil. O'Neil is the former leader of the elite military team SG-1.

Christopher McDonald (Superhero Movie, Rumor Has It) Stars as Senator Alan Armstrong. The U.S. Senator and head of the International Oversight Committee that governs the Stargate program. He is the father to Chloe Armstrong.

Janelle Monáe (Bad Boy/Atlantic Records) The Grammy® nominated artist plays herself in an upcoming episode. Janelle and her band will perform "Many Moons" and "Sincerely," two songs featured from her latest album titled "Metropolis."

Amanda Tapping (Sanctuary, Stargate SG1, Stargate Continuum, Stargate Atlantis) Reprises her role as Samantha Carter, an astrophysicist and United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel.

Michael Shanks (Stargate SG1, Stargate Continuum, Stargate Atlantis) Reprises his role as Dr. Daniel Jackson, Stargate's archeologist and linguist.

Gary Jones (Stargate SG1, Stargate Continuum, Stargate Atlantis) Reprises his role as Chief Mst Sgt. Walter Harriman, commander technician of the team.

Carlo Rota (24, Saw V) Stars as Carl Strom, head of the International Oversight Advisory (IOA), the civilian oversight committee that heads up the Atlantis Expedition and all funding.

Which Major Franchise Is Getting A Lesbian Leading Character?

Apparently Ming-Na's character, Camille Wray, is a lesbian. The show put out a casting call for Sharon, a major guest star, who's 35 years old and Camille's "long-time partner." (I suppose it's just possible they mean Bridge partner.) She's described as "sensitive, soulful" and has "strong emotional scenes." And she may be a recurring character, in yet another sign that we'll be looking in at the folks left behind on Earth on a regular basis.

Stargate Universe's Ming-Na will play franchise's first open gay member

Ming-Na, one of the regular characters in SCI FI's upcoming Stargate Universe, will play a lesbian, one of two gay characters in the show, Gateworld reported.

"There are at least one and potentially more gay characters on Universe," series creator Robert C. Cooper told fans at the official Vancouver Stargate convention earlier this month, according to the site.

Added executive producer and creator Brad Wright: "There's actually two."

AN EXPANDING UNIVERSE

GateWorld talks with Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper

Two-thousand and nine is a big year for the Stargate franchise. The second series has come to an end, with plans for an Atlantis movie on the horizon. The radically unique third series, Stargate Universe, premieres this fall. During our visit to the studio in Vancouver this month, GateWorld had the rare privilege to sit down face-to-face with the two men who are shepherding this show.

Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper have been at the helm of the Stargate franchise for 12 years, Wright creating Stargate SG-1 with Jonathan Glassner in 1997, and Cooper and Wright creating Atlantis in 2004.

Though production on SGU is currently locked down tight, the executive producers talked exclusively with us about the series and what else is in the works for Stargate. In the interview they share their reasons for wanting SGU to be different, the large, ensemble cast, and how the series will stand apart. We get answers about aliens, the Destiny, using the Stargate, and more. We also get an update on the SG-1 and Atlantis movies.

GW: Stargate Universe.

BW: We're in the middle of shooting episode five right now! We keep looking around and touching wood and waiting for the other shoe to drop ... but damn, it's been a good time.


GW: Clipping along.

BW: Everybody is coming together. We couldn't be happier with our cast.


GW: They're all twittering like crazy, they love it. [Laughter]

BW: Well, you know, it's not a guarantee that you're going to suddenly all start clicking and the stories are going to be working and everything is going to be the way you hoped it was going to be.


RC: I think there is a lot of fear amongst the fans that it's going to be so different that it's not Stargate, or that it's not going to be something that they like. They want a science fiction show to watch. I think that there is certainly a need out there for science fiction product. There is a demand from people. They want good genre programming. I think they are afraid it's going to be too dark, or that it's not going to be something they want out of a "sci-fi" show. But I don't think that's going to be the case.

I mean, dark and edgy is kind of a couple of buzz words that people like to attach to things. At the end of the day, it's going to have a lot of the things that I think people have always liked about Stargate. The sort of sense of adventure and exploration ...
