Getting Robert Carlyle for SGU is quite the coup because in addition to being an excellent actor, he also has name recognition outside of sci-fi.
However, as talented as he is, he won't be able to overcome lazy writing so I hope the writers take more care with SGU than they did with SGA, otherwise, Robert Carlyle will join a long list of talented actors who were let down by bad writing.
I hope they're using character bibles and a show bible this time because perhaps that would limit their tendency to write more for their favorites while wallpapering and/or getting rid of the other characters.sigpic

Getting Frank Vincent for Vegas is pretty impressive too.
I haven't met anyone who hasn't at least heard of MacGyver. We started watching Stargate orginially because we were big MacGyver fans and RDA was in it.
My whole point is TPTB have insulted the demographic that has ... a) made the "franchise" popular for 13 yrs; b) kept them working for 13 yrs; and c) made the Sci Fi channel a household name - by deciding we're too old and they want a younger audience. Then they insult us further by saying we're stupid enough to watch anything with a Stargate label. The Field of Dreams of Sci Fi? I don't think so.
Atlantis has been in a state of constant flux for the entire 5 years it's been on. In 10 years of SG1, how many main and popular recurring characters did they kill? 3 to my knowledge - Fraser, Martouf & Jacob Carter. Aside of Jonas in season 6, Lam in season 7 & Mitchell, Vala & Landry in season 9, how many major cast changes were there? None. None at all for the first 5 years, zero. If I named all the personnel changes Atlantis went through, I'd be here for an hour. Sci Fi didn't promote it well,if at all and here we are ditching a perfectly good show with an interesting, unique premise for what? Stargate 90210? Starfly? Sexgate? Stargate Voyager? It's truly sad it's come to this because being unique is what has made Stargate ... Stargate. A unique premise, great acting and genuine, believeable characters. Who believes SGU will continue this cycle? From what's been coming out of the homefort so far? Not this fan!

The guy can act, and I wonder if he will be keeping that accent.

Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting, The Full Monty) is set to arrive in Vancouver to star in the latest Stargate series, Stargate: Universe. Edgier and younger in tone than the two previous series, SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians who must fend for themselves as they're forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack.
While I've never been a fan of these shows, this kind of casting always gives me that extra push to at least check out an episode or two. Carlyle has always given intriguing performances, from his early role on the British series Cracker to the more recent 24 TV movie.

im glad they got him on board, sgu needs this calibre of actor. i just hope they get new writers in aswell as the old ones. i totally agree with some of the sentiments on here and on the podcast about repetitive writing styles especially in atlantis there is some very good work going on, but it needs freshening up. stargate is one of the greatest television franchises ever and tptb should be looking to push it even further into the hearts and minds of people who arent familiar with the show. theres no room to stagnate and play it safe. so come on guys n gals, lets see some really good work from sgu!sigpic
