I believe that the Zat is supposed to look like a snake because it was introduced back when Apophis was the main enemy and his symbol was the snake, But yes it does look much like a chicken leg. I would hope that the writers wouldn't need KFC to come up with a weapon design though.

Anyone ever think why would other Goa'uld System Lords would be using something that has a strong resemblance to Aphosis snake? That was the general idea when first introduced.

But I guess you retcon it to be the the Goa'uld snake as opposed to the Aphosis snake.

The design makes no sense anyway either.

When all of them are snakes anyway, perhaps they felt it was fitting.

You would think the SGC could take one apart and assemble it in a better designed case for it. I doubt the mechanism that makes it go up and down is important to the firing of it.

Perhaps part of the inner workings DO depend on the covering.

Couldn't they just reproduce the material then? I highly doubt it was that special.

OU answer is that they did not want to make Stargate Command look to advanced running around with their own version of a zat. Though honestly byt the time of season 9, they could have introduced it.
