And if we know anything about people, is that they don't like to share. Colonial wars don't make sense here, becuase there is no issue of lack of land, you have an entire galaxy.
If things are organized well enough then there shouldn't be any problems with sharing.
As for colony wars, well if you have one nation controlling a planet and another nation was to decide to just land there unannounced then that could be taken by the original owner of said planet as an act of aggression and cause a war, having things joint from the start removes the possibilities or lessens the chances of things like that from happening IMO.

Then still arrises the problem of what language. Im English is used, the French (and former French colonies), the Spanish speakers and Chinese will have a lot of trouble.

Incidentally, the close proximity of the two gate networks at Midway suggests that the 8th chevron is not a distance multiplier but is instead an alternative network selector.

The best thing I can see (although would never happen) would be to Teriform and colonise Mars and possibly Venus. Built colony ships to bring people to the planets but dont give them hyperdrives. That way you appease the people and are able to control what planets are colonised.
But before we event think of moving onto new planets we need to form a united government otherwise we end up with hundreds more human countries. we need to unite before we spread out.

Unless we spread out to Mars, Luna and Venus. Because then we can pretty much stay as we are. But with something like letting an Al'kesh crash we could prove we are not allone but keep the gate concealed and bring more tech to the public, that way slowly going towards opening up the gate.
This would give us reasons to unite little by little. And colonising Mars, Luna and Venus would be practical, close and we can work on it slowly, we just need to terraform.

A private network can be achieved by altering the control crystal, allowing gate travel to a select few planets.
Good point about the gate network thing too.

I also think that every colony should either be multi-cutural and international to avoid sparking an interplanetory war based on ancient Earth-based prejudices.Meh.
