Anyhow, really try the bump mapping. It's a great, if not the greatest of tools to make a model look better. And it's resource-efficient. It is more processor friendly than gazillion polygons.
You can also try colouring different sections of the hull differently, like I do. I don't know if it's good or bad, but I find it useful when I plan future textures or something like that. It adds a nice contrast.
