The "Ancient" civilization was far and away the first group of people to develop in our region of space (presumably the Local Group of Galaxies that include Ida and Pegasus).
From here they expanded into several galaxies, forming the Lantians in Pegasus, the Alterrans in Milky Way, and the Ori in their Galaxy- with other Unknown Groups forming in different galaxies. Each was fairly autonomous. Eventually unity broke apart and the Ori and others among the unknown groups split off into their own factions, with only the Lantians and the Alterrans remaining on friendly terms- even hosting Atlantis itself on occasion, possibly as a diplomatic envoy. [Timeframe: prehistoric]
While the Ori and Unknown Groups continued to prosper, the Alterrans were destroyed completely by a plague that may or may not have originated with the Ori. They left behind their Stargate network which eventually facilitated the rise of the Goa'uld. They did not ascend. [Timeframe: several million years ago]
The Lantians continued on with their work in Pegasus, eventually giving rise to
the Wraith. Unable to quell the insurrection of these creatures, and their experiments into nanite weaponry as well as Project Arcturus, they had no choice but to flee to the Milky Way, the realm of their dear departed bretheren. There they eventually learned ascencion. [Timeframe: 10,000 years ago]
Upon ascension, the Lantians sought to re-unite their family of races. They were likely rebuffed by all except the Ori, who rather than joining them learned to ascend and then declared outright war. The Lantians have opposed them ever since.
Currently, the Ancients greatly fear involvement in the affairs of lowers- not because of ethics, but rather the terror of showing more of ascension only to have those people turn on them and, with or without the Ori, destroy them. [Timeframe: less than 5,000 years ago]

I realize that this may be inconsistent with some cannon, but I beleive it to be the best method of analyzing the Ancients, their history, and their motives. Criticism is welcome, I plan to do another "Stargate History" installment addressing the rates of technological development relating to military pressure.
