Do you need to be in a solar system to dial a gate?

The PoO is only used when dialing out. When you're dialing another planet, you input your PoO to tell the destination gate where you're coming from. You can't dial another gates PoO.

Back on topic: It's a plot hole. We've seen gates moved and used at least 4 times, probably more, and there has never been a problem with the gates not being 'calibrated'. Whoever wrote First Strike apparently forgot or ignored this simply because it interfered with the story they were trying to tell.

Well, the gate wouldn't have worked anyway since they didn't know where they are. Even if the gate was moved, it would've only worked once it was brought to the location of another PoO, at least going by Serpent's Lair.

They shouldn't have used "calibrated" though.

As long as you know your location and exact messurements of where the nearest stars are etc, then I don't think you need to be within a system

Which isn't a problem because it's the DHDs and the correlative updates from other DHDs that tell you where you are.

All they needed to do was force a correlative update and all would be well.

          It's a PLOT HOLE!!

That gate was in orbit of Earth, which is why Daniel could dial out using that gate's PoO. He effectively tricked the gate network into thinking he was dialing out from the SGC because the two gates were that close together.

They shouldn't have included that part in the cliffhanger at all. It was a dumb move and created a big plot hole.

I swear, the writers should pay more attention to the series they write.
