I think of it this way
A ZPM is like a battery. The energy is determined by its ability to create energy through a chemical reaction.
To clone the battery, u need to know how to make it, and understand the chemicals creating the energy as well as how the energy is harnessed. You also need to have a supply of the chemicals.
A ZPM could not be copied, as their is no understanding on how the zpm accesses the vacum energy. Nor do we know the mechanics on how to make the said space time bit. In effect we do not know how this battery interacts with the chemicals to create the energy, nor do we know how to create the chemicals for the said analogy.
