    Quantum Of Solace - 04-02-08

Neil Jackson cast as henchman Mr Slate in `Quantum of Solace`

American actor Neil Jackson has landed a role as a henchman called Mr Slate in the 22nd James Bond film "Quantum of Solace".

The 31 year-old actor was recently added to the film's entry on IMDB. Although being far from reliable for facts during production, the casting was confirmed by Jackson himself.

Jackson, a former amateur boxing champion, has previously appeared in the 2005 epic "Alexander" as well as TV series "Blade" and "Stargate SG-1".

I don't know if this has been mentioned before but Colin Cunningham "Maj. Davis" is currently a regular on a new CBC comedy based on Douglas Coupland's book called jPod. It also has Peter Deluise as the director. I've watched the first 2 episodes and it if very funny. Check it out

Slice of SciFi Interview With Salli Richardson-Whitfield

Posted by Sam on Tuesday, 5 Feb 2008 “Eureka” has been one of those SCI FI Channel shows that we here at Slice of SciFi fell in love with right from the beginning and the actress that our intrepid reporter Linda Craddock had the honor of speaking with is one of the primary reasons we enjoy the program as much as we do.

Salli Richardson-Whitfield began her acting career on the stage with her first prominent gig being the 1991 production of “Up Against the Wall.” She then caught everyone’s attention with her breakout role as Valerie just two years later in “How U Like Me Now.”

Besides her outstanding weekly performances on the sci-fi hit “Eureka,” Salli has also appeared in SF programs such as “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Stargate SG-1,” voiced the character of Elisa Maza on the animated series “Gargoyles” and most recently appeared opposite Will Smith in the big screen, box office blockbuster “I Am Legend.”

Some of her non-SF productions has seen her star with such leading men as Denzel Washington in “Antwone Fisher,” Samuel L. Jackson for “The Great White Hype,” and Laurence Fishburne in “Biker Boyz.”

We know you will enjoy this fascinating interview with one of America’s finest actresses.

Brian Markinson, who played the mild-mannered Lotan in SG-1's "Scorched
Earth," can be seen as Jimmy Roszko, who killed four Mounties back in
            2005 in Mayerthorpe, Alberta.

            excerpt:

            http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNew...0205/20080205/

Brian Markinson, who plays the man behind the "Mayerthorpe" tragedy,
tells CTV.ca he tried to humanize Jimmy Roszko.

"I feel that nothing this man did was outside the realm of humanity,"
            says Markinson.

"He was a man who was a product of society and his home life and he
was on an inevitable collision course with the force of law and
            order."

The film portrays the events that lead up to the horrifying tragedy
on March 3rd, 2005, in Mayerthorpe, Alberta.

Four RCMP officers were gunned down by Jimmy Roszko and it was the
RCMP's greatest loss of life in a single day.

Mayerthrope" follows the decade long battle between Roszko (Brian
Markinson) and Corporal Alex Stanton (Henry Czerny), a fictionalized
character who represents the many law enforcement officers that
            Roszko encountered over the years.

Markinson believes the film is a call for Canadians to re-examine how
the country deals with its criminals.

"Rozko played the system, the RCMP delivered him up time and time
again, and the system failed. It failed everybody," says Markinson.

"This is what our movie is about. I don't think we take sides,
there's nobody standing on a soap box in our movie. I think people
will be able to look at this movie and draw their own conclusions
about if their justice system works."

As an actor, Markinson has over 100 credits to his name. He's played
a multitude of bad guys, most notoriously a murderous father on "NYPD
Blue," but none have been as brutal as Roszko.

Because the script, written by Andrew Wreggitt, painted such a vivid
and haunting picture of Roszko's pyche, Markinson said he couldn't
            resist taking the role.

"The script was so good and well thought out, that as an actor, how
could I not take this role? It's very meaty, multi-layered and I've
played guys like this before, and it's a very rewarding process,"
            says Markinson

...It wasn't until 1996 when he led an intergalactic exploration team through the Stargate, that he really got my attention. Here was fused the crush of my youth with the most amazing pyramid theory this sci-fi fan had ever heard. My Heartfelt thanks go out to Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich for originally devising it, though I truly love how it evolved in the hands of Brad Wright and Jonathon Glassner. It was definitely something I could get on board with, made so much easier to swallow with the competent handling of the SGC commanding officer, played by Don S. Davis, who also came to my attention originally in the MacGyver series. (BTW, I am so completely sure that he and my dad are cousins. Same last name, same ‘do it or I’ll wallop you’ face. It is absolutely unnerving to watch the man sometimes.) The utter watchability of the show guaranteed that Mr. Anderson would be at the forefront for a good long time. Others must have agreed as the show itself ran for ten years, though regrettably without him for the last two, and led to him being made into a Honorary General in the US Air Force. It has also spun two Movies due out this year.

St. Vincent de Paul Society to honor athlete and actor at gala

                        By R. W. Dellinger

At its 100th anniversary celebration on Feb. 16, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul's Council of Los Angeles will be honoring two men for their work in the community - Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster and former major leaguer Rick Monday and Academy Award winning actor Louis Gossett, Jr. Funds raised will go toward expanding the Council's summer camp for disadvantaged children.

                        **snippage**

Sports were also an important part of Louis Gossett, Jr.'s early life. The 6'4'' Brooklyn native attended New York University on an athletic scholarship, and became a star basketball player. After graduating from NYU, he played briefly with the New York Knicks in 1958 before deciding to focus on acting.

In 1961, he performed alongside Sidney Poitier in "A Raisin in the Sun," the acclaimed play and film about an African American family. After appearing in many films and TV network series, he landed the part of Fiddler in the 1977 landmark ABC miniseries "Roots," winning an Emmy.

His prolific body of film and TV work includes "The Deep," "Enemy Mine," "Toy Soldiers," "Sadat," "Iron Eagle" and the science fiction series "Stargate SG-1." His role as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in the 1982 film "An Officer and a Gentleman" won Gossett an Academy Award for best supporting actor.

                        **snippage**

An alumnus of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the 71-year-old actor has been involved with the service organization for years as well as the NAACP and CARE. He has also worked to help build New Orleans with the organization Renew Orleans.

But in creating the Eracism Foundation, Gossett has dedicated the last quadrant of his life to an "all-out conscientious offensive" against racism, focusing on the education and moral development of children.

"We have been a little derelict by allowing the media and music and hip-hop to raise our children, when it's our responsibility," he noted. "Sometimes we use single parenthood as an excuse from keeping our families tight. It can't be an excuse anymore because children are everybody's responsibility."

The actor proposes conflict resolution and history classes to teach different ethic and racial groups about each other, mixed with intense workshops on English, reading and computers plus a healthy dose of personal responsibility. And he hopes to put into practice the first large scale Eracism curriculum at the Council of Los Angeles' camp this summer.

"I think you should take disadvantaged kids out of their environment and give them some solid foundation," Gossett said. "We have to create a fertile atmosphere to nurture our children, mentor them, discipline them and teach them. They have to have respect for the opposite sex, for their elders, knowledge of their history, why they're on the planet and what's expected from them.

"We have to behave the way we pray," he stressed. "We need to get back to that 'one-nation-under-God' thing."

Editor's note: For information about the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Los Angeles' 100th anniversary "An Evening of Love and Laughter" on Feb. 16, call Kim Rathman, Ph.D., at (323)276-6083 or visit www.svdpla.org.

'Mythbusters' Gets All 'MacGyver' On Us

                          February 7, 2008

What do you get when you take one of Discovery Channel’s most popular shows, and combine it with one of the kitschiest shows the late 1980’s and early 1990’s had to offer?

I dare say you get pretty darn good television. For their 100th episode, airing February 20, the crew over at Mythbusters are tackling some of the most famous impromptu inventions by mullet bearing TV star MacGyver.

In a preview clip screened by B&C, Adam and Jamie test to see whether pure sodium, immersed in water, can really cause an explosive chemical reaction big enough to bust down a wall. The small scale results looked promising.

                          **snippage**

The fact that they test such a wide range of myths, both plausible and far fetched, is a big part of the show’s appeal. After all, how many shows would celebrate a 100th episode with a tribute to MacGyver? For most programs it would be ridiculous, for the Mythbusters it makes perfect sense. Now if only they could test the myth of whether Richard Dean Anderson knew how ridiculous his hair looked, I would all be set.

                                Audio interview with Kavan Smith

(If you can't listen live, the interview should be available for download at the site the following day.)
The Kavan Smith audio interview is now available to download (courtesy of Destiny Talk Radio Network and the SciFi Guys):

Kavan's interview runs approximately 22 minutes.

As an added bonus, there is also a Joe Flanigan interview (from a previous SciFi Guys interview)! Joe's interview runs approximately 9 minutes, and sounds like it was recorded sometime during season three.

Andee Frizzell (the Wraith Queen) is the guest next week.
