SGA - Mitch Pileggi - New York Times: HBO Film 'Recount':

HBO Film About 2000 Recount Draws Protests From Democrats

    By EDWARD WYATT
    Published: May 14, 2008

Wounds from the Florida recount, still healing for many Democrats, are being ripped open again for some prominent former advisers to Al Gore. They say that a coming HBO film dramatizing the ballot battle after the 2000 election unfairly blames them for the Democrats’ failure to secure the White House.

Warren Christopher, the former secretary of state who served as the public face of the Gore team in the early days of the recount effort, said this week that he believed the film, “Recount,” was “pure fiction” in its portrayal of him as a weak strategist unprepared to stand up to the aggressive tactics of James A. Baker III, the former secretary of state who was the chief Republican adviser.

The film, which has its premiere on May 25 on HBO, stars John Hurt as Mr. Christopher, Tom Wilkinson as Mr. Baker, Mitch Pileggi as Mr. Daley and Laura Dern as Katherine Harris, then the Florida secretary of state. Kevin Spacey plays Ron Klain, the Gore lawyer who led the on-the-ground recount effort and through whose eyes much of the action is seen.

          Interview with Janina Gavankar

          Stargate-Planet, April 2008

Janina Gavankar was born on November 29th, 1980 in Illinois, USA and she's best known for her role as "Papi" in the tv series "The L-Word". We will see her as "Sergeant "Dusty Mehra" in the fifth season of Stargate Atlantis and we're grateful that Ms. Gavankar allowed us to ask a few career related questions.

          **snippage**

S-P.de: How did you prepare to play your Stargate character? Did you watch previous episodes? Would you consider yourself a "fan" of Stargate?

JG: I'm a fan of sci fi in general. It was hard for me not to have a full on geek-spazz-out moment as I toured the sets. We went through gun training on our first day. I tell you, the amount of power and fire that comes out of a full load P-90? That gets you RIGHT in the zone.

With many thanks to Daniela for the following translation of the article:

              'Bewildered every time':

Richard Dean Anderson about turning green

Richard Dean Anderson, 57, was able to find a way out of every difficult situation as 'MacGyver.' Today he's on the board of a non-compromising environmental organisation, the Shepherd Conservation Society who hunts whalers worldwide. An interview about commitment, SUVs and little housewives - excerpts from 'Ivy' magazine.

Richard, you support the Water Keeper Alliance, Sea Shepherd and cancer prevention. Why?

My generation will be blamed for what our children have and don't have and what kind of world they'll be living in. To be honest that's making me a bit nervous.

              Guilty conscience?

No. I have just finished building my house according to the most recent energy efficient standards. We have three tanks in the backyard to collect, filter and re-use water. I do what I can. But the attitude of many people annoys me.

              Why?

Well, that you have to explain to people that they need to act responsibly. That you still have to say: Don't waste. If you don't eat something, don't buy it. If you don't use something, turn it off. Can it be any easier?

No, but don't most people know that?

I live near Malibu in California. Here people drive big SUVs, Hummers, everything that needs less than a gallon of gas for 20 miles isn't being taken serious as a car. And I swear: I'm bewildered every single time when I see these tiny housewives in these huge cars. What are they doing? Waste gas and pollute the air with CO2 - but for what exactly? To go some place where they can get their nails done?

Your daughter Wylie is nine. Is she going to be like that?

No chance. We spend a lot of time near the Pacific, she loves the ocean and the animals. She knows what I do and why. She's very smart already. But to teach her to turn off the light when she leaves a room: That's a real challenge.

                Sci-fi, fantasy and fun

                Thursday, May 15, 2008

Mobicon is a big tent. It has to be, to hold this many worlds.

As a bulletin at http://www.mobicon.org puts it, the event is "Mobile's only science fiction/fantasy/gaming/anime/comic book convention." That covers a lot of ground, from "Star Wars" to milieus where dragons and wizards are more the norm, from often-raucous strategy games to the deceptively quiet world of comic books.

It all comes together at the Ashbury Hotel & Suites on the I-65 beltline, where Mobicon XI takes place Friday through Sunday.

Attractions running through the weekend include:

                **snippage**

Panel discussions on a variety of subjects, including some featuring media guests such as actor Colin Cunningham of "Stargate SG-1," science fiction and fantasy author Mark Poole, paranormal investigator Patrick Burns and author Sharon Green.

                **snippage**

A canned food drive framed as a friendly competition between fans of "Stargate" and "Star Trek."

Weekend registration is $40 at the door; daily registration is $15 on Friday and Sunday, $25 on Saturday. Children under 12 and seniors over 65 get half off those prices, and children under 3 are admitted free. Registration opens at 9 a.m. each day, with activities running into the evening.

Exclusive Interview: FADPOV Talks With Ryan Robbins (Part 2)

                    CONTINUED FROM http://www.fadpov.com/read.php?ID=736

FADPOV: What’s the craziest costume you’ve ever had to wear on the set?

Ryan: Wow. Probably not the craziest but the most intense and least comfortable costume was when we shot the first episode of the mini series for Battlestar Galactica. I played the old man and it took six hours in prosthetics to age me. To have the walk and the suit… those suits are really tight!

Ladon’s costume in Atlantis. I mean, god bless the costume department, but it’s one of the most uncomfortable costumes ever.

                    **snippage**

FADPOV: Finally, from all the actors you’ve over the years, who has kind of stood out as being the most genuine?

Ryan: Edward James Olmos is a shining example of how to behave on set. He’s an icon! He is a great mentor, he is incredibly loving and kind, and he cares very much about whatever projects he’s working on. Every time I’ve met him and spoken to him he’s been absolutely lovely. He commands respect, and gives you the opportunity to be respected, but at the same time he has no problem expressing his displeasure in something because he doesn’t do it in a petulant way. He does it in a very dignified way.

                    **snippage**

As far as great guys, everyone will tell you about David Hewlett and Paul McGillion. And I would say that my personal experience with each and every one of the cast and crew of Battlestar Galactica is exceptional, more so than any show I’ve ever worked on. Everybody. The Stargate Atlantis guys are also just awesome.

SG reference ….. Stanford Blatch - Willie Garson

                        Excerpt:
For a series so steeped in romance, the eagerly awaited “Sex and the City” movie feels a trifle half-hearted. Although there’s pleasure in seeing HBO’s fabulous four reunited, writer-director Michael Patrick King doesn’t fully bridge the gap between TV and film — delivering major story flourishes but, too often, playing like a regular episode bloated to five times its customary length. Best in its small moments, the movie should find receptive gal pals congregating for the mother of all viewing parties, but appeal beyond that core should present New Line with less of a storybook finish than it doubtless would like.

The character actor you know as Stanford Blatch talks about how he got the role, and what it was like revisiting it for the movie

                        Excerpt:

Wherever Carrie Bradshaw stepped in those pricey Manolos, her gay best friend, Stanford Blatch, wasn't far behind. But behind the dapper Stanford is character actor Willie Garson, who quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his Sex and the City alter ego's ever-loyal demeanor and side-splitting quips. The 44-year-old actor — who boasts a friendship with Sarah Jessica Parker that predates the series — talks about the power of Sex and the City, the upcoming movie, and strangest thing he's ever been asked while filming the show.

Their vision was the same as ours, to find a cure in time to save their son. We’re honored that they selected CureDuchenne to help make this vision a reality. Chris was fortunate to work at Prosum Technology Services who looked at ways to help, and contacted us to put on an event in honor of Will. Not only did they provide monetary funds, they also provided the help of their staff, vendors and customers, who generously contributed their time and resources. Without their support, and the massive efforts of the Martins, this event could not have taken place.”

“At Prosum, our employees are considered family,” said Ravi Chatwani, Prosum CEO. “Will’s diagnosis affected all of us. We wanted to do whatever we could to show our support of the Martins and their efforts to find a cure for Will, which is why we put so much effort into this. Our entire Prosum Team has come together to make this a fun night and raise a lot of dollars for this great cause.”

San Manuel's Celebrity Poker Tournament raises more than $500,000 for Darfur relief
                        By FONTANA HERALD NEWS

Professional poker player Annie Duke and Academy Award nominee Don Cheadle hosted the Ante Up for Africa celebrity Poker tournament and exclusive VIP after party at San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino to raise awareness and funds for the Darfur crisis in Africa last week.

Together with San Manuel's $500,000 donation and the proceeds from the silent auction, which totaled more than $4,000, they were able to raise a significant financial contribution for the Not On Our Watch project.

“When I heard about San Manuel's decision to increase the donation to $500,000, I couldn't believe it,” said Cheadle, co-founder of Ante Up For Africa. “I am so very grateful to them for their generosity and for helping us continue to bring the plight of the refugees of Darfur into the light.”

Poker professionals and celebrities alike were all-in for the Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament.

Aside from Duke and Cheadle, other celebrities and poker pros included WILLIE GARSON from “Sex and the City,” Josh Malina from “The West Wing,” Tia Mowry of “Sister Sister,” Scott Ian of Anthrax, Howard Lederer, two-time World Series of Poker champion, and poker pros Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, Phil “The Unabomber” Laak, and Andy Block.

Television stars in Antigua for debut of acclaimed film

                              Sunday May 18 2008

Cast members of Frances-Anne Solomon’s A Winter Tale are set to arrive in Antigua tomorrow in advance of the film’s premiere at the Deluxe Cinema. Jamaican-Canadian stars Peter Williams and Michael Miller will attend the film’s launch screening and VIP reception this Thursday at the Deluxe Cinema.

The movie’s Antigua premiere is sponsored by HAMA Films/HAMA TV, PoleVault Communications and City View Hotel.

A Winter Tale’s cast includes Jamaican icon Leonie Forbes.

Peter Williams, who was dubbed “one of Canada’s finest” actors by the Montreal Gazette, portrays Gene Wright in the film – a concerned social worker who takes it upon himself to start a local Black men’s support group, after a young boy is accidentally killed by a stray bullet. Michael Miller plays opposite Williams as a local high school kid named DX. In addition to the theatrical release, A Winter Tale’s community distribution project Talk It Out will continue in Trinidad, and possibly in Antigua, as the film screens to groups of young people through local schools and community organisations.

Sitting in a Pasadena coffee shop, Robert Picardo runs through a gamut
of emotions as he talks on his cell phone: happy, concerned, laughing.
                                Is he doing a scene?

"No," he replies, "just arranging to pick up my daughter after school!"

A longtime STARLOG favorite, the versatile character actor with the
expressive eyebrows and rubbery face is immediately recognizable from
numerous roles: Eddie Quist in THE HOWLING, Coach Cutlip of THE WONDER
YEARS, Dr. Richard on CHINA BEACH, the holographic Doctor on board
STAR TREK: VOYAGER and Richard Woolsey, STARGATE SG-1's panicky
                                government bureaucrat.

"I've been acting professionally for 32 years," he says. "I got my
first job in 1976, an Off-Broadway play with Diane Keaton. That was a
kick, to work with a talented pro my first time out. But, yeah, people
seem to really love me in science fiction."

That love continues today, with his work on SG-1 and its spin-off,
                                STARGATE ATLANTIS.
