SGA - SciFi Wire: Robert Picardo - Persons Unknown:

Robert Picardo reveals the mystery behind Persons Unknown

      By Ian Spelling
      4/20/09

Robert Picardo (the Stargate series) told SCI FI Wire that if all goes according to plan, his guest shot on the upcoming Lost-esque series Persons Unknown may evolve into a recurring role. Picardo similarly leveraged his Stargate SG-1 guest shot as Richard Woolsey into a recurring role on SG-1 and later into a series-regular role on Stargate: Atlantis.

Persons Unknown is a co-production of Fox TV Studios and Televisa, and 13 episodes were filmed in Mexico this past fall. The show will air on Televisa in Mexico and is reportedly being shopped around domestically and elsewhere around the world. SCI FI Wire spoke exclusively to Picardo earlier this month. Following are edited excerpts from that interview.

A brief excerpt from the edited excerpts...

What can you tell us about Persons Unknown?

Picardo: That's from Chris McQuarrie, who wrote The Usual Suspects. And the executive producer is Rene Aubuchon, who also wrote the Caprica pilot along with Ron Moore. It's reminiscent of the classic Patrick McGoohan series The Prisoner. It's about these people who are strangely abducted and held against their will and are apparently being studied or manipulated. It's a very exotic, paranoid premise for a show. The actors are great. Alan Ruck, an old friend of mine, is one of the main cast members [along with Chadwick Boseman, Gerald Kyd, Kate Lang Johnson and Kandyse McClure from Battlestar Galactica].

'Carny' a 2009 made-for-TV movie, starring Stargate: Universe's Lou Diamond Phillips and Alan C. Peterson, Domenic Cuzzocrea, Vlasta Vrana and Simone Elise Girard. Airs Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 9pm on the SciFi Channel (US).

        From RHI, the movie's synopsis:

When a traveling carnival comes to a rural Nebraska town, the caged attraction everyone is talking about is the alleged Jersey Devil. The local pastor, enraged by the death of his son at the hands of the beast, has plans for igniting his own brand of hellfire and revenge.

          EXCERPT:

In the early 1980s, I read an article in the Los Angeles Times about an elderly couple who were out walking their beloved dog when a group of young thugs robbed and beat them to death. The thugs also killed the dog.

The article then discussed two different incidents in two different American cities.

At least three Bulma candidates turned down the role, and Hugh Jackman (best known as the actor behind Wolverine), who had been given the role of Goku, left the project to work on the second and third X-men films instead. The film did retain some major players, however; an actor from the ever-popular Stargate series was chosen to play Piccolo (**) and rumors surfaced that The Rock (Scorpion King, Wrestling figure) had expressed interest in playing Cell. Rumors at the time were that Tom Welling, who played the lead role in the hit series Smallville, had been tapped to replace Hugh Jackman as Goku.
