Director Ken Girotti’s TV movie Mayerthorpe, which documents that tragedy, has been nominated for a Gemini Award for best direction in a dramatic program or miniseries.

Mayerthorpe was filmed outside Calgary in spring 2007 and aired on CTV in January. It has received a total of seven Gemini nominations.

“Frankly, when I first heard they were going to make a film out of it, I thought, ‘Why would anybody want to watch that?’ ” said Girotti, 52, who moved to Merritton as an infant and spent many years in St. Catharines.

Girotti said the movie’s powerful screenplay changed his mind.

“When I read the script ... I was just over the moon.

“It was one of the best scripts I’d read in I can’t remember how long,” he said in a phone interview during a break from directing an episode of the CBC show The Border in Toronto.

Girotti, who graduated from Niagara College’s radio and television program, has directed dozens of TV movies and episodes, working in Canada and south of the border. His credits include Stargate Atlantis, Law and Order: Criminal Intent and Rescue Me.

He was also nominated for a Gemini in 2006, for an episode of the TV thriller series ReGenesis. For his Mayerthorpe direction, he’s also been nominated for a Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) award this year

Major Davis returns for Atlantis finale

      WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 (GENERAL)

GateWorld has received word that Paul Davis will be crossing over to
      Atlantis for the series finale.

      A brief excerpt:

Major Paul Davis of the Pentagon will be paying a visit to the Pegasus
Galaxy in the series finale of Stargate Atlantis, GateWorld has
      learned from reliable sources.

Little is known about "Enemy at the Gate," the one hundredth episode
of Atlantis, but the title implies volumes. Speculation abounds that
it will involve the nemesis introduced in the Season Five two-parter,
"First Contact" and "The Lost Tribe."

SG1 - Amanda Tapping (mentioned) - Windsor Star (Canada): Drama school marks 40 years:

              Drama school marks 40 years

              Ted Shaw, Windsor Star

              Published: Friday, September 05, 2008

It was an inauspicious start for the University of Windsor's fledgling school of dramatic art in 1968.

Founding director Daniel P. Kelly was a faculty-of-one, who oversaw acting classes, plays on a makeshift stage, and a costume and props department crammed into three army huts.

But the seeds were sown for what would blossom into one of Canada's leading drama schools. The school would eventually move into a converted grocery store at the corner of Wyandotte and Sunset...

...Some of the graduates who have gone on to professional theatre and teaching careers include Antoni Cimolino, Brian Raisbeck, Marc Bondy, Claire Jullien and Amanda Tapping.

              **snippage**

Actually, there are a pair of anniversaries this year -- the 40th birthday of the school, and the 50th for the students' performing arm, the University Players...

Sanctuary - The Toronto Star: She Sells Sanctuary:

From The Toronto Star (Toronto, ON, Canada):

(Please follow the link for the complete column.)

                Sep 05, 2008

by Rob Salem - television columnist

                SHE SELLS SANCTUARY:

I defy anyone to recognize Stargate star Amanda Tapping in her latest incarnation – a remarkably well-preserved 157-year-old mutant hunter – on Sanctuary, an innovative new Canadian-made fantasy adventure, debuting with an extended two-hour episode Oct. 3 at 9 p.m. on The Movie Network (then moving the following Friday to its regular hour slot at 8).

The British-born, Toronto-raised Tapping, who not only stars but is also an executive producer, has traded her familiar blond military crop for a sultry, shoulder-length brunette look, and an adopted English accent that hearkens back to her pre-school past.

"Having been born in England and growing up (here) in a rather British household, it wasn't so much of a stretch," she allows. "It actually feels like going home ...

"It's weird, having played an American on television for the last 11 years, to suddenly make that switch from American to British, and from army boots to stilettos. It was a complete overhaul.

"I felt the need personally and professionally to completely reinvent myself."

Sanctuary is itself something of a reinvention, originally test-run as an Internet serial and similarly shot on computer-generated "virtual sets," ?* la Sin City and 300.

"It's huge," Tapping enthuses. "It's not that much different than actually shooting on a real set, once you get over the `chroma key' headache, which lasts about three days.

"David Gettis, our director of photography, is an artist – he paints with light, that's the best way I can describe it. You don't feel like you're standing in front of a green screen. You actually feel like you're in the catacombs under Rome, or on an island off Scotland. We go everywhere."

And sometimes where they shouldn't. "Every now and then," admits Canadian co-star Robin Dunne, "we'll have a chase and I'll run through a wall or something by accident. And (director/co-producer) Martin (Wood) will have to call `Cut' and give me the parameters again."

                      There’s SOMETHING About Sci Fi

                      By M.J. SIMPSON

It’s cold in Winnipeg in November. Damn cold. “You’ve seen the film, so you know you can see some of the breath,” notes director David Winning as he discusses his creature feature SOMETHING BENEATH. “It got down to minus-45 degrees Celsius. A lot of the dialogue had to be replaced, because you could literally hear the actors’ teeth chattering on the track. So it wasn’t a great introduction for Kevin Sorbo to Winnipeg—but I’m sure he’ll be back.”

Winning and Sorbo go back a long way, having worked together through five seasons of ANDROMEDA. In SOMETHING BENEATH (making its DVDebut September 9 from Genius Products, following airings on the Sci Fi Channel), Sorbo swaps Dylan Hunt’s space outfits for a collar in the role of Father Douglas Middleton, an ecologically aware Episcopalian priest (note to budding screenwriters: Episcopalian priests are handy because they’re allowed to have love interests). Attending an eco conference in a brand new hotel, Father Middleton finds himself caught up in a series of bizarre and horrific deaths. The building, it seems, has disturbed a sentient ooze which creates terrifying, fatal hallucinations in the minds of its staff and guests...

...Not that Winning is a stranger to the monetary and structural restrictions of television. In addition to ANDROMEDA, he has helmed numerous episodes of STARGATE: ATLANTIS, DINOTOPIA, EARTH: FINAL CONFLICT and the kid-friendly horror anthologies ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? and GOOSEBUMPS.

I also entered the “Walk of Fame,” the big hall where the stars of popular and cult SF, fantasy and horror shows sit behind tables and the fandom lines up to pay their respects, and pay $30 for an autographed photo. Dozens are here --- Over at Beau Bridges’s table, a fan dressed as a blood-stained chef wandered over. “Are you looking for a hospital?” deadpanned Bridges, who played General Hank Landry in a few permutations of the “Stargate” shows. (Like father, like son: Lloyd Bridges, briefly acted in the original “Battlestar Galactica” show from the 70s). Bridges told me he had been to other conventions, but was his first Dragon*Con. “This is a totally new phenomenon [for me], these conventions,” he continued. “Science fiction fans are so devoted and passionate.” Still, he seemed fairly blasé; he seemed to have seen it all. “Once a guy asked me to sign the architectural renderings of his house. He had his house build like Stargate Command.”
