Dragon*Con - Aug 29 - Sept 1, Atlanta, GA

In just a few short hours I’ll be on a plane winging my way to Dragon*Con 2008 in Atlanta. Woohoo! D*C is a huge con, with 40,000+ fans of scifi, comics, fantasy, and other flights of fancy. I’m going as part of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, but I’m also participating in the Skeptic Track (talks and panels about critical thinking) as well as Space and some science fiction. Kevin Grazier and I will be rehashing our Science of Science Fiction panel we did at Comic Con, for example...

...Loads of stars will be there, too, including Nathan Fillion, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, James Hong (indeed!), and a gazillion others. Skeptics attending include Michael Shermer, Richard Saunders, Randi, and a bunch more too. My friends astronomers Bill Keel and Pamela Gay will be in attendance too.

Just after three o'clock and I'm back at the Hyatt Regency waiting for a Cobb Salad from the hotel lobby restaurant.

The robotics panel went well, with a packed room all eager to find out what we had in store for this year's competitions. Basic answer - better engineering, more contestants, and more expected destruction. Since the robotics panels are all at the Hilton, where the "Walk Of Fame" is also located, I decided to wander through and see which stars were there.

Since it is still early a lot of the 85 signing tables were empty, but there still a good number of well known faces selling their 8x10 color photos and other things to entice the fans to part with a $20 bill or ten. Among the more well known names present were Edward James Olmos from Battlestar Galactica and Miami Vice fame, longtime actor Beau Bridges, Walter "Chekov" Koenig from Star Trek fame, and Brad Dourif from Lord of the Rings (he played Wormtounge and thankfully is not nearly as hideous looking in person as he was in the movie).

Next week's episode of Psych, "There Might Be Blood," includes among its guest stars, Steve Makaj, or SG1's Col. Makepeace. Airs on USA, on Friday, Sept. 5 at 10pm -- and is usually repeated several times on USA throughout the next week.

The movie, WIDOW ON THE HILL, began at 1pm ET (ends at 3pm ET) on Lifetime Network. Jewel stars as the daughter, whose mother just died and her father has hooked up with some blonde who is probably after his money. On right now.

Q: Can you please tell me what happened to O'Neill and Hammond from "Stargate SG-1"? Are they still acting? -E. Radda, Scarborough, Ont.

A:Richard Dean Anderson, who played Col. Jack O'Neill, is semiretired. Don S. Davis, who played Maj. Gen. George Hammond, died in June of a heart attack. He was 65. Both men appeared in the straight-to-video movie "Stargate: Continuum." Davis also can be seen in the upcoming horror film "Vipers" and the action-adventure movie "Far Cry."

Veena Sood was born in Nairobi, Kenia. She's of East Indian descent and immigrated to Canada with her family. She has dual citizenship to Canada and the UK. In Canada, she's based in Vancouver and we're grateful that she's taking some time off her busy schedule to answer a few career related questions for our German website visitors.

S-P.de: In the last episode of Stargate SG-1's season 6 ("Full Circle") you played an Abydonian woman; in 2006 in the episode "Stronghold", you played the character of "Dr. Kelly". How did you prepare for these characters and what could you tell us regarding the shooting of your scenes of these two episodes?

VS: The Abydonian episode was fun because we were playing people from another world. So it was nice to be in different types of wardrobe, and inhabit a new world. For "Dr. Kelly" I basically had to be a straightforward Dr. A part I've done many other times in film and TV!
