Region 1 Season 9 DVD News

Seems that MGM has moved their distribution from Sony to Fox, which is why there has been no announcement regarding when Season 9 will be released in North America on DVD.

In the meantime, I'm ordering the Season 9 DVD release from Australia (available Aug 16). It's also in the standard packaging like previous releases of Season 1 -8 in North America.

For anyone in USA/Canada considering ordering, bear in mind this set is Region 4 and in PAL format so you'll need a compatible DVD player that can be made region free and can convert PAL to NTSC format for display on a tv in North America.

Either that, or have more than one DVD-ROM drive in your computer. One for Region 1, another for Region 2 or 4, or however many drives you have. With a computer monitor, the picture clarity is much better, especially with anamorphics. For an NTSC picture you would have a picture of 852x480, while with a PAL picture, you would have an image of 1024x576. The biggest difference, besides vertical picture size, is the framerate. NTSC framerates are faster at 30fps, while PAL uses only 25fps.

I use Region 1, which is good enough for me.

The one format that can surpass both is High Definition. I do believe that Atlantis will be in Blu-Ray along with SG-1 (although I may believe this will apply to SG-1 from Season 8 onward).

I hope they can release S9 in October like previously. I look forward to my October trip to Bestbuy.
