Man sentenced for assaulting ‘Stargate Atlantis’ star Jason Momoa

A 22-year-old man from Venice, CA pleaded no contest today to one count of assault, stemming from a 2008 fight with actor Jason Momoa. Momoa is best known for his roles as Jason Ioane in Baywatch Hawaii and as Ronon Dex in Stargate Atlantis. He's also the father of two children with former Cobsy kid Lisa Bonet.

According to the District Attorney's office, Dominic Bando got into a verbal altercation back in November with the actor at the Bird Cafe in Los Angeles. Bando hit Momoa in the face with a pint beer glass. Momoa needed 140 stitches during reconstructive surgery.

Bando was given a five-year state prison term
Thanks for the update. I'm GLAD the punk got 5 years. Maybe he'll think twice before he brandishes a weapon (which in this case was a heavy glass, but hey, it caused a lot of damage ) Poor Jason's still concerned about how his eye looks.

Thanks for the update. Five years, good. I think some restitution would not be out of line. Restitution to Jason to pay for the medical bills.

I doubt it. Stitches aren't exactly a huge medical cost

The scarring and any potiental plastic surgery would be high medical costs!

In the US yes. That is why Obama is trying to change things.

Five years seems really steep to me, but then I don't know all the background, I don't know if this was an "out-of-blue" attack, I don't know if the man had any other convictions or such...

Re: Obama (this is all I'll say)
              Spoiler:
Ah, but would it be covered? It's cosmetic, not life-threatening...

The man was out on parole, IIRC. For a weapons violation.

If you have medical insurance.... anyway, he saw a plastic surgeon, from what I recall. Not cheap. And his face IS his business. And smashing someone in the face with a glass mug is damned dangerous.

I doubt plastic surgery would be covered under any new government medical plan, not unless it impair vision, eating or something like that that would eventually cost even more money.

5 years is steep, but the bottle could have cost Jason his acting career or even his life. A broken glass can cut just like a knife. He got Jason in the face, the neck and jugluar isn't that far away.

And insurance companies can be petty. Saw a story recently of a woman who had half her face shot off with shotgun. Insurance companies consider reconstruction of face so she can breath normally to be 'cosmetic.' *headdesk* but they cover crap like Viagra!

Anyway, glad Jason didn't lose an eye or anything. And five years for aggravated assault? Do the crime, do the time. Period.

Yes they can, just like any company or organization tends to behave when keeping costs down is one of the main measurements of success for a company.
I have had quite the opposite experience, where the insurance companies have really gone out of their way to help.

I agree. Chances are the guy won't do a full five years anyway.

                        According to the LA Times,
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Judith Champagne sentenced Bardo to a five-year state prison term and ordered a restitution hearing, set for next month.

true, insurance companies can help, but i think when they deny a case like the one above, they should actually go out and talk to the person and see what life is like. i still think viagra and stuff like that should be out of pocket.

I read in the papers recently that they're trying to ban glass pints somewhere in the UK due to their use as a weapon, so...

Glass has been banned from loads of pubs in Sydney (Australia) after 11pm or something, for that reason. But in strange news, some Swiss researchers have won the "Ig Nobel" Peace Prize (they are awarded for strange research) for discovering that full beer bottles are less dangerous than empty ones when you are whacked over the head with one.

Hum.......that's good to know! I'll make sure I don't tick someone off with an empty bottle
It was good news to know, at least for 5 years that person won't cause trouble for anyone else.
