    Canadian directors vie for guild award

    Directors Guild of Canada honor bestowed in the fall

    TORONTO -- David Cronenberg ("Eastern Promises"), Denys Arcand ("The Age of Darkness"), Jeremy Podeswa ("Fugitive Pieces") and Kari Skogland ("The Stone Angel") will compete for the best director trophy at the Directors Guild of Canada Awards in the fall, organizers said Monday.

    The TV series competition will see Stephen Surjik compete for his work on "Intelligence," Holly Dale for "Durham County," James Marshall with "Smallville" and Martin Wood for "Stargate Atlantis."

    The DGC awards will be handed out Nov. 8 in Toronto.

          David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises leads the winners at the 2008
          Directors Guild of Canada Awards

          Toronto - November 09, 2008 - The 2008 Directors Guild of Canada
          Awards brought out the film and television industry's best and
          brightest to last night's event at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto.
          The star-studded celebration kicked-off with a cocktail reception
          before comedian Shaun Majumder inaugurated the seventh annual awards
          ceremony to honour the best work created by DGC members last year.

          "The DGC Awards are a celebration of our accomplishments from the year
          gone by, an opportunity to fete our many talented members who have
          mastered the art of the possible that is Canadian film and
          television," said DGC president and acclaimed director, Sturla Gunnarsson.

          The Lifetime Achievement Award went to pioneering director, Eric Till
          (Bethune, Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace, Fraggle Rock). The Don Haldane
          Distinguished Service Award was presented to long-time DGC president,
          Alan Goluboff.

          A total of 20 team and individual craft awards were presented to DGC
          members whose incredible work continues to fortify the quality of
          filmmaking in Canada.

          The winner in the DIRECTION - TELEVISION SERIES category was:

          Holly Dale for Durham County - Episode #1

          Congratulations to Martin Wood on his nomination.
