    [Mayor's house - her office]

Mike looked up as Hunt entered the office. The man seemed very nervous, something which Mike was glad for, for some reason. He'd never liked Hunt much. The snivelling weasel.
He was also glad for the interruption of his brooding even if he wondered why Hunt was there.
He'd half-lied to Sandra before, back when she caught him sitting in the back yard. Yes he was worried. But not about the change in season - something that always had an effect on his mood, and she knew this - but about her. Sandra was now two months pregnant, and the only doctor in town wasn't on duty. Again. It angered Mike often how Winchester was so whimsical at times.
He'd learned about the man's venture into the woods for a week or two, then he'd returned, and they'd been lucky with the Williams case, that the two had been at Jack's when it happened. What would they do if this kind of thing happened again, and there was no one there?

Stop it, Mike, he told himself. You know there's more medics in town. Winchester knows it, too. You made it a point to know about everyone's skill. You *know* this town.
Still, Winchester was their only "official" doctor, albeit related to the base. There were nurses living in the village, as well as three retired medical doctors, even a midwife. Well, he thought to himself wryly, if it came to Dr Cottle or Dr Winchester, who would you prefer to be poking your wife? Definitely not Winchester, what with his boyish good looks and all. Still, Cottle's a good guy, probably the best of the lot we have. We're lucky to even have them.

He sighed at the thought of having to go talk to Cottle, causing Heroux to look at him again, and talk to him quietly, out of Hunt's earshot.

    "You alright, Sheriff?"

Mike kept his voice similarly low. "Yes, fine. Hi, by the way, Jose. Sorry I was rude earlier."

"No problem. I wasn't in the best of moods either anyway. You're not the only one with a family." Heroux said, guessing the reason for the Sheriff's brooding mood.

Mike decided to go along with that line of thought. It had a grain of truth anyway. "Yes, typical isn't it. Emergencies always happen when it's the least convenient!"

"You got that right, Sheriff. Let's hope the others get here quick so we can get on with things, whatever it is.".

    "Mm-hmm."

Mike got up, stretched, and walked to the window - one of those that you could look out from but couldn't look in to, something for which he was glad. He frowned a little watching Cooper and his aide walking toward the Mayor house. God, not him again. Nor her... Compared to them, Heroux was a good man, and one Mike knew how to play off against, unlike Cooper who had a knack for twisting things upside down whenever it suited his ego.

Hunt hurried out again, and greeted Cooper warmly, it seemed. Guess my hunch about Cooper and Hunt being friends has been right all along. Oh well, what comes around, goes around. He shrugged and returned to his seat, waiting. He hated politics and hoped the meeting would be over, soon.

Goodwin frowned at Simmons shadowing Cooper. I specifically said that she wasn't invited. "Kevin, I'm really sorry to interrupt your Saturday evening but, I felt this confidential information needed to be passed on immediately."
She moved aside to let Cooper in but held her hand up in front of Brihanna, "Thank you, Ms. Simmons, for escorting Mr. Cooper. Although I do believe that he could have gotten here on his own. This building is rather well known."
She began to shut the door, "I'll make sure he finds his way back home. Good night, Ms. Simmons."

Before Laura could shut the door, it was pushed inwards again and a voice from the porch said, "Why are you standing out here, child? And where is your coat? You'll catch your death. Shoo. Go finished getting dressed."

"Ambina," Goodwin gave the other woman a quick hug, "So sorry to get you out tonight."

The middle-aged woman took off her floor length cloak, revealing one of her 'everyday' saris, deep teal blue with understated silver embroidery along the borders.. She straighted the sheer veil covering her blonde hair and re-arranged the drape over her shoulder.
"I really hate winter, Laura," Ambina observed in her precise English accent, "Perhaps I should speak to someone about finding a warmer climate to locate another town."

        <<NPC ~ Kevin Cooper ~ Brihanna Simmons ~ The Mayor's>>

Using the confusion of the clutter at the door Kevin snatched Brihanna's hand and pulled her into the hallway. She gave him a fond smile and a little stroke of the face. He whispered into her ear, "Let me take care of this."

"As you wish Mr. Cooper." she murmured. She made eye contact with Mr. Hunt giving him a nod and one of her inviting smiles. She stuck like glue to Kevin's side. She refused to make eye contact with the Mayor or Ambina Djahm as they made it into the hall. She took a small glance at her outfit to see that everything was in place. Pleased with what she saw she gave her hair a slight adjustment and tapped a small note into her PDA. She tilted her head to Kevin and gave him a look of adoration.

Kevin would never admit it but she always knew how to make him feel he was as powerful as he thought he was. He knew Laura would be miffed but he really didn't care. She had drug him away from his dinner party and if Miss Simmon's presence was an annoyance to her then all the better. He stared her down as if daring her to pursue the matter further.

Mike frowned, hearing the commotion by the door, and decided to go help Laura out.

He took a few purposeful steps to the hall and looked at the scene. Apparently there was something going on involving Miss Simmons. Something which he had seen coming, from the way the two had sauntered up to the mayor's house.

"Need any help here, Laura?" He asked, ready to shove Simmons out if need be.

Ignoring Cooper, Laura shook her head at Mike, "No. That's fine. Thank you, Mike."
She walked into the office and picked up a pad and pen, "Since Archie isn't here, Ms. Simmons has agreed to take notes for us."
Slapping it down on the desk at the other side of the room, "Hard copy notes, Ms. Simmons. Do you think you can handle that?"

"Alright", Mike nodded, then further ignored Cooper and Simmons. "'Evening, Mrs. Djahm." He said courteously, giving the woman a nod. Mike followed Laura further into the office and sat back down at his spot, watching the goings-on.

Meanwhile, Heroux had followed the happenings with interest. He too greeted the other councilmembers. "Good evening, everyone. So, Laura... What is the big emergency? Why did you drag us all out of our homes?"

Trying to catch his breath, Nick gave the man the same ‘deer in the headlights’ look. He knew the impression they must be giving, what with his shirt pushed up to his armpits and a woman sitting on his stomach.
"Officer, it's really not what it seems."
"I KNOW what it seems like, mister," the deputy said wryly.
After Cal scrambled off him, Nick stood up. Tugging down his shirt and zipping up his jacket, he tried again, "We let the noise get a little out of hand. I'm sorry, officer," the man peered closely at the nametag, "Kullen."
The deputy flashed his light up and down Cal's figure, noting that her clothing was all in place. He flicked the beam back to Nick, "Are you folks going to be in town long? Who are you staying with?"
Pushing his hair back out of his eyes, Blue answered, "We're staying at the Mayor's residence tonight and going back to the base tomorrow."
Suddenly suspicious, Kullen focused the light on Nick's face. Squinting closely, he asked incredulously, "General? General Blue?"
Nick held up his hands by his shoulders, "Guilty as charged, officer."
The deputy started shaking his head slowly and turned off the light. "Never mind, sir," he sighed, "Go on about your business but ... try ... to keep it quiet. Please."
"Thank you, Deputy Kullen," Nick called to his retreating back. Beginning to chuckle again, he looked to Cal, "Busted. Busted like a couple of teenagers."
                [Park]

The light slowly brightened as the larger moon, Phorcys, crept out from behind the clouds. Callista clapped a hand over her mouth to keep from laughing aloud again. She pointed, wiggled her finger at Nick and finally gasped out, "Leaves. You've got ... hanging ... in your hair."
The woman walked over and started picking dry leaves out of Nick's hair. Giggling, she added, "The only thing I could keep thinking was, 'Thank goodness there's a JAG officer in town. We won't have to call Colonel Sharp to make our bail.' We'd never live it down."

Stepping through Jack's door Zach finished his rant on his amazing find. Taking in the tantalizing smells thoughts of eating returned to his mind. Poor Sarah had heard the ongoing tales of the controversial nature of Moby Dick in its time and how the people of the day had truly missed the brilliance of this masterpiece. He noticed her attention drawn to the corner table and smiled when he saw Kim and Lance. He was pleased to know his earlier comments hadn't caused any tension for the day. It was great to see the amusement on Kim's face. Lance obviously had her fancy and attention. Glad someone around here can figure these things out.

His mind once again drifted to Claire. He took a deep sigh, and I had been doing so well this afternoon. "What did you have in mind Sarah, straight to dinner or did you need to take care of anything back at the room?"
                    <<snipped for space>>

Sarah had to endure Zach regaling her with various subjects. In the end she droned and and only nodded and made little 'mmmmh' noises which seemed to keep Zach happy.

They entered Jack's place and Sarah senses were bombarded with food which made her more hungry, if possible. She spotted Kim and Lance sitting at a table and gave her a quick wave, hoping she wasn't interrupting anything.

"Ummm," In answer to Zach's question, "Dinner first I think."

                      [Jeanie Wilman's House -> Jack's Bar]

Jeanie looked at herself in the long mirror that hung by the door. It was her normal appearance, with a few extra's, because she was "going out". Dark jeans, silver belt, dark blue shiny boots. On top of that she wore a form fitting tunic, in a brightly coloured pattern. A thickly beaded necklace finished the outfit off. Since it was winter, she put on her burgundy coat, it was the warmest one she owned, and made of the finest wool. These clothes were what she had been able to get when her bonus had gotten through. It sometimes made her wish that she'd gotten more clothes, but the money had ran out pretty quickly between the time of receiving the bonus, paying off all her debts and arriving on Gaia. There'd been so many things she'd needed to buy. Home decoration for one, and luxury utensils for another, because she'd been fairly sure none of that would've been in the house she'd get, and she hadn't been sure about what kind of place she was going to go to.

She grinned at her reflection in the mirror. All of that was past now. She made do with what she had, and a few extra trinkets here and there from the Foreston shops, finished it all off.

Adding a dark purple scarf, Jeanie headed out the door. It was singalong at Jack's and she never missed those nights. They were great fun.

The woman reached Jack's fairly fast. Even though it was pitch dark, she knew Foreston by the back of her hand. She stopped for a moment hearing some sounds from the park but given her distance to said park it might as well have been a few birds or other animals. Jeanie shrugged it off, and continued to walk, her high-heeled boots clicking down the road as she went.

She opened the door to Jack's, and smiled happily, here it always had a sense of "coming home". It was filled up with people by now, and there was a nice ambience. After hanging her coat and scarf on the coat rack, she sat down at her customary place by the bar and ordered her usual drink. It was always the same: 'something nice with an umbrella, not too strong'. After all, the night was still young.

                      "Hey, Jack. Who's on tonight?"
She hoped it would be Eddie. His songs were the best, she thought, though from the looks of things Jack had already put the karaoke machine in place.

Nick groaned and rolled his eyes, "Oh lord, he could have created havoc with that information. Professional courtesy is a wonderful thing." While he was talking, he took off his jacket and shook the crushed leaves out of it and off his back.
"I think I've got pieces d... ," the man stopped and raised an eyebrow at Cal's eager look, "Nevermind where I've got pieces, missy, I'll take care of them myself."
With one last wiggle, he put his jacket back on and zipped it up. After a quick finger comb of his hair, Nick held his arm out to Callista, "Before we get in any more trouble, let's head to Jack's."
She took his hand and they started walking toward the lights of the restaurant.
"Ohhhh man, I haven't laughed like that in years. God, my ribs are going to hurt tomorrow," he sighed, "and I don't give a rip."

They soon arrived at Jack's and, after one last brush down to lose the leaves, Nick held the door for Cal to enter. Surveying the already busy room, the couple went over to the last open bar stool and settled in.

Brihanna gave one of her charmed I am sure smiles with a little bat of the lashes. Her hand moved slowly down Kevin's back letting him know it was okay, he didn't need to take it any father. "Absolutely Mayor Goodwin, it would be my pleasure to serve the council on Mr Cooper's behalf. However, I think it will be more expedituous if I use this." She held up her PDA and gave the Mayor a roll of the eyes. People really need to move into the era of modern technology. "I will have it proofed and forward to all participants first thing tomorrow morning. I have each of your email addresses on file." She gave a condescending tilt of her head and positioned herself in the chair that Laura had indicated. She tossed her hair slightly, slowly slid on her glasses, draped one leg over the other and began tapping on her techno toy.

Kevin found Brian Hunt in front of him gloating over his supposed accomplishment. He kept a close eye on the going ons between Brihanna and The Mayor. He had no doubt she could handle herself. He gave a smug smirk and turned to continue with Hunt. With a nod "Hunt, you as well. Yes Brihanna has brought me up to date on the situation. Of course I would prefer to hear your details on the position." He didn't really want to hear anything from Hunt or anyone, he didn't want to be here. However, Hunt served a purpose that he didn't want to deal with at the moment so he indulged him. Wanting to snicker at Brihanna and Laura butting horns he pretended to be interested in Hunt's comments. He had to hear what Hunt had to say since he really hadn't been brought up to date by his assistant as he should have. Such admissions would belittle his appearance of authority. "So tell me Brian, how did your meeting go exactly?"

                            [ Mayor's house ] (( I wasn't worried. ))

Sitting behind her desk, Laura discretely started audio recorder that was used at every meeting. She frankly didn't trust Cooper or his slinky little aide.
Knocking on the desk with her knuckles, Goodwin said, "Everyone is here now and the sooner we get started the sooner we'll be done."
She flipped over her page of handwritten notes and began the meeting, "As I said before, I'm sorry to disturb your Saturday evenings. General Blue came to town tonight to brief me on some happenings at the base. I know everyone was concerned when the military didn't offer to send people to rebuild the damaged structures in Foreston."
The women looked pointedly at Cooper and Hunt, "They had much bigger fish to fry. The quake took out the main generators and, in the process, damaged the Gate and destroyed the DHD."
Holding up a hand to stop the questions, she asked, "Please hold your comments until I'm finished. The F302's that we saw conducting operations were heading off-world to retrieve a new one from an uninhabitated planet. Lucky for all of us, they succeeded. The Gate is once again functional."
Goodwin debated breaking the next bit of news gently or harshly. "The General couldn't call during this time because he'd been snaked and was in custody."
Harsh won out just because her council weren't the only ones to have their evenings disrupted and she, too, was PO'd.

He could get on your nerves when his arrogance got the best of him. However, he did serve a purpose. His place on the council made a friendship with him bearable.

"The meeting was rough, I wasn't really accepted with arms wide open. After some convincing though I was able to get Goodwin to agree with me and once that happened Blue softened up. He still does not trust me though, I have to tread lightly. He allowed me to come to the base on a trial basis" Brian then looked over to the group, "let's go into the room now, the meeting will start shortly."
