Radz - I absolutely loved the 3 Tripod books, but thought the 4 eps of the series I saw were only so -so. I don't remember it airing in the US.
I have never seen the books available! Will look them up in our library. The show aired on PBS, if I remember, and then I was lucky enough to get the series at a convention on video.
Ooooh! Is that the one with Michael Praed? *swoons*
That it is! I saw the vid for sale in a video store, back before I ever saw it on tv, because they were showing it on SHOWTIME here and we couldn't get that channel. The actual cover of the video stayed in my mind for the next five years when I moved upstate from the city, where we were able to get cable, and happily, they were in the middle of showing it then. I watched it all the way through and kept watching it, and finally got most of it recorded. The tapes are in sad condition because they're old and reception on cable wasn't all it was cracked up to be.
I have to admit I was partial to him myself, but my real favorite of the show was the dastardly villian, Sir Guy of Gisburne In fact, it was back in '92 that I started writing my first fanfic, with a group of RoS lovers to which I belonged, online. We're still all in touch too. In two years we'll have been together as a group for twenty years!
