Why did society lose interest in space from 2010 to present?

It seems like from 2010 onwards society hasn't just lost interest in sci fi but space altogether. It is slowly coming back due to SpaceX.

This sounds like a childish article.

It seems like from 2008 to 2013 trashy reality TV became more prevalent and people were more pressured to conform to stereotypes.

Why was the late 2000s/early 2010s so anti intellectual and materialistic?

Geek culture has become much more acceptable thanks to the MCU and Game of Thrones but did their success suck out all the hot air from the room? Did their success prevent the TV show producers from considering making a brand new space opera? There was The Expanse but it never became as big as the MCU or Game of Thrones.

With the MCU and Game of Thrones out of the way could a space opera become the next big thing in pop culture or could a space adventure could have become a pop culture phenomenon like the MCU and GOT during the 2013-2017 time period if it was good enough?

The early 2000's were far more fantasy driven with things like LOTR's and Harry Potter.
It goes in cycles my man.
The 80's and 90's were far more sci-fi driven and before then it was more fantasy as well.
Sci-fi is just harder to do "right"

The following is my opinion, you are free to give it all due consideration.

Are we talking about real life or screen life?
In both cases, the answer is money first, followed by other concerns.

As far as real life goes, our national interest dropped to nearly zero in the years immediately following the successful moon landings of the late 1960's. There was a sense of "been there, done that, what's next?" and next would have been an expensive and very long term program to go to Mars. At the same time, many people thought that the money being spent on space exploration & research would have been better spent on earthbound needs; social services and so forth. We were just getting out of the Vietnam fiasco, and we were looking inward.

As far as screen life, money is by far the biggest factor. SFX is expensive to produce on a sustainable basis. The original Battlestar Galactica taught us that. While the expensive, whiz-bang special effects worked very well for "Star Wars" in 1977, in 1978, when Galactica tried it on a weekly TV series basis, the effects in the very good (for the time) 3 hour premiere, they ate the entire budget, so they were left reusing shots from the premiere for the entire season, and the audience got tired of the same shots over and over.

Nowdays, while CGI has lowered the cost of space effects to some degree, it's still way more expensive to produce a space based exploration or other show as compared to an earthbound show, usually depicting a destroyed civilization that has lost the ability to travel in space. How many of these have we seen?

Also, our entertainment reflects our real life attitudes. The 1960's were a time of optimism and promise for the future. This was at least partially driven by the promise of the Apollo program, which did land us on the moon, and other scientific advances of the era. In this context, we saw shows like Star Trek on TV, 2001 in the theaters and so forth. Today's national outlook is no where near as rosy, it is far darker. Therefore, darker stories being told.

Eventually there'll soon be another hype for sci-fi as it has been since everything is coming back, with new generations to reach out to old things get interesting again often

There is a free TV channel where I live that does re runs of all Star Trek series and some of Stargate now and then for years, they would hardly do it if people did not care about space and stories from far off galaxies still

And as long as people think Star Wars is great there'll always be a part of society having and interest in sci-fi

Maybe. IF we ourselves don't become one of those post apocalypse societies so many of the recent Sci Fi shows have been about.

I know I haven't lost interest in space. I really do believe that we'll see more spaceships going to the Moon, and even a manned trip to Mars as well in the future. It just takes time.
