    BatWOMAN / SuperGIRL

One would think that Melissa Benoist would be a little annoyed that Ruby Rose gets to be Batwoman, while she has to be Supergirl. Granted, Supergirl started when Benoist was in her mid-20's, while Ruby Rose is 33 starting Batwoman.

At some point, if Supergirl stayed on the air long enough, do you think they would change it to Superwoman? Just for argument's sake, if Benoist was 40 years old, would she still want to be called Supergirl?

Or is it just a DC licensing thing?

Supergirl, Superwoman, Batgirl, and Batwoman are four different characters.

      There's a Superwoman character?

Also, the whole "girl" naming thing was the first thing Cat Grant dealt with when Kara said something about it.

As I understand it, "Superwoman" was created and actually published by DC at least once as a placeholder to prevent someone else from using the name. Legal/Copyright crap or some such.

Partially and longer-term, yes, they've done it from time to time (like, across decades) to make sure they've got a copyright claim.

Superwoman has also been a recurring character since 2007 or so as the alternative version (from another Earth) of Lois Lane. One Superwoman or another has also appeared semi-regularly on Prime Earth since 2011, in various different titles. There was even an ongoing Superwoman title from 2016-18 that ran for 20 issues or so.

Ha... forward thinking by DC... create character in order to maintain control of the name.

Actually, in this day and age, that kind of thinking is common. For example, many companies register domain names that are similar to their own names or sites.

In order to maintain control of the brand... it's a natural thing to do.

Superwoman was also an evil alternate universe counterpart of Wonder Woman in previous decades and other iterations.
