Default Build your own SG combat unit.

First let me explain my thinking. SG teams are like Special Operations/Recon. But what about conventional Military operations? So if you could set up a new unit what would it look like?
    Nation?
    Branch?
    Size?
    Type?

    Nation: U.S.
    Branch: U.S. ARMY
    Size: Brigade
    Type: Infantry
Name: 174th Offworld Brigade Combat Team
    1 Headquarters company
    3 Infantry battalions
    1 Cavalry squadron
    1 Field Artillery battalion*
    1 Engineer battalion
    1 Support battalion

The Brigade will center around Earth designed puddle jumpers that don't require the ATA gene to operate.

    * = I'm not really sure if a field artillery battalion would be neccessary because their role would basically be filled by a BC-304. Thoughts?

lol I saw your post last night and I had started thinking about it.
But I was thinking at a squad or platoon level. You’re being a bit more ambitious.

I do agree it should be Army based.

Well first season, I can see the need for small teams as the Stargate program is 'secret'. But at the end of S1, the Gao'uld ships coming out of hyperspace near Saturn (could be seen with amateur telescopes) and then parking in earth orbit (could been seen with the naked eye and in detail with binoculars) means that the Stargate program is out of the bag. So here is what I think an SG team should look like.

    SG-Team

    1st platoon
The First Contact SG squads will be set up on the Special Forces model with 10 members each with a specialist role with lots of cross-training. SG-1 from the series is pretty good for 1/2 the team, with the addition of a medic. You would double the 5 members to make the 10 person team, so that you have redundant team members. SG teams in the diplomatic and technical roles would have their 10 person team set-up specifically for their roles.

There would be 3 ten person combat squads of a Sgt & Cpl (M16A3 rifle), 4 grenadiers (M-203 grenade launcher), 2 SAW gunners (M-249 LMGs) and 2 assistant SAW gunners (M16A3 with extra SAW ammo). Everyone would have 2-4 hand grenades and a claymore mine.

There would be a heavy weapons squad of 2 M-60 machine guns and two assistants with extra ammo and M16A3's. A M3 84mm recoilless rifleman who also carries an M16A3. Ammo bearer for the recoilless rifle with M16A3. Two Stinger crewmen with M16A3s and Stinger reloads. Two more ammo bearers with M16A3s and M-60/recoilless rounds.

The HQ squad would be the LT and platoon sergeant. You would have 2 medics. There would a sniper team of a M-82 .50 BMG rifle and spotter with M16A3. There would be 2 scout teams with HK MP5SD silenced sub-machine guns.

2nd & 3rd platoons would be the same as the 1st platoon without the SG squad.

The 4th platoon would be the heavy weapons platoon.
There would be a 60mm mortar squad with 2 mortars and 8 rifleman with M16A3s. One carries the mortar, one the base plate and the rest carry ammo.
There would be a M2 .50cal machine gun squad with two M2's and everyone with a M16A3. One carries the receiver, one carries the two barrels, one carries the tripod and the last two carry ammo.
There would be a M3 recoilless rifle squad with 3 M3's and 7 ammo bearers with M16A3s.
There would be a Stinger squad of 4 Stingers and 6 ammo bearers. All with M16A3s.
Platoon HQ squad with LT, Platoon sergeant, 2 medics and 7 ammo bearers, all with M16A3s.

HQ platoon for the SG teams 1st company would be the normal extra medics, admin, supply, etc personnel.

The 1st platoon would always go through the gate with the SG team with the rest of the company on standby, if the situation was warranted for stealth. Otherwise the whole company would go through the gate. If the SG company was expected to spend time on the planet before resupply and to hold the position, a stand by company would help carry supplies through the gate and then return. With 38 minutes, you can get a LOT of supplies and troops through the gate.

There would be a motorized company standing by for each SG team that would be basically the same as the SG company (minus the SG squad), but in trucks and HMMVs. There would be an extra platoon in the motorized company with enough drivers/vehicles that the SG company would able to be mounted as well if needed. Also there would be a LOT more .50cal and M19 grenade launchers mounted on the vehicles. Along with the mortars upgraded to 82 mortars and some TOW missiles added.

There would be an armored company on standby for each SG team with two M2 Bradley platoons and a M1A2 Abrams platoon (4 vehicles each). A M3 scout platoon of 6 M3 Bradleys would be included with the armored company.

An artillery company would also be on standby with a 4.2" mortar battery, two M-109 self-propelled howitzer batteries and an MRLS battery.

A support company of repair, recovery, fuel and supplies would be a part of each SG team.

An engineer company would be attached to each SG team so that they have organic construction support as needed.

If time permits, the helicopter companies of UH-60 Blackhawks and Ah-64 Apaches would be sent through the gate and assembled for air support. For planets where the SGC wants to keep the place, A-10's and F-15s would be sent through to be assembled. The air support would be pulled from the overall SGC and assigned as needed.

Then you can have 3 divisions (armored division, motorized and/or light infantry) on call for any of the SG teams.

So in summary, each SG team would consist of:
Light infantry company with the SG team.
Motorized light infantry company with enough vehicles/personnel to make the SG company motorized if needed
    Armored company
    Artillery company
    Engineer company
    Supply company

Yes, my son says I have overkill for making each SG team a heavily reinforced battalion.

Yes, keep the field artillery battalion. Then the troops know they have fire support in case the BC-304 gets busy or called away.

Bradleys, Abrams, MLRS, field artillery? You guys are going to need a bigger Gate.

Nope, the gate is big enough. The inside diameter is 16 feet. That means that you can fit an 11 foot 3 inch (per side) box inside that diameter. Except for the vehicles based on the Bradley and tank chassis (M-551 Sheridan excluded as it fits the 11' box) all US Army vehicles fit. If you go up about a foot from where the bottom of the 11' box is, then Bradleys and tanks fit as well. You would have to design a folding bridge to go over the ring, but that is trivial engineering. Take the wings and tails off of fighters, and they will fit as well. Just reassemble on the other side of the gate. Helicopters would be easier to get across that way.

With the proper rails on both sides, certain Delta IV rockets would fit (or Falcon 9 these days). Then you can have satellite support as well.

There are lots of things to do and my son says that I would not be an explorer SGC, but a colonizing one. Which would be fine with me. I'd just colonize the willing or empty worlds.
