Star Trek: Discovery - Season 3 (spoilers)

Well....one day since Season 2 ended, and talk from the showrunners about Season 3 has already begun.

Bits and pieces from the Alex Kurtzman interview with THR:

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Star Trek: Discovery co-creator and co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman broke down the second season finale in some detail. He also removed any doubt as to where the show is headed:
We are jumping 950 years into the future for season three.
Kurtzman talked about how the decision to jump the show into the 33rd century frees them up:
We love playing within canon. It’s a delight and a privilege. It’s fun to explore nooks and crannies of the universe that people haven’t fully explored yet. That being said, we felt strongly that we wanted to give ourselves an entirely new energy for season three with a whole new set of problems. We’re farther than any Trek show has ever gone. I also had experience working on the [J.J. Abrams] films where we were stuck with canonical problems. We knew how Kirk had died, and we wondered how we could put him in jeopardy to make it feel real. That’s what led us to go with an alternate timeline; suddenly we could tell the story in a very unpredictable way. That’s the same thought process that went into jumping 950 years into the future. We’re now completely free of canon, and we have a whole new universe to explore.
When asked if characters from other Trek series might show up, Kurtzman again noted the time jump puts the show far beyond where Trek has been before:
There will be canonical references to everything that has happened in the various shows; we’re not erasing that. But we’re so far past that point that all of that is a very distant memory. We’re very excited to see how you put the elements of Star Trek in an entirely new universe.
No details were provided on what the crew of the Discovery will have to deal with in this 33rd century, but he did indicate that it isn’t going to be all smooth sailing:
All I can tell you is that Control is officially neutralized, but there will be much bigger problems when they get to the other side of that wormhole.

Additionally, Discovery propmaster Mario Moreira tweeted this morning that (at least his team) has begun working on Season 3.

I am looking forward to what they’ll do in the future. I think that season opener actually writes itself. And if they’re heading to Terralysium then we get to see how far they’ve thrived since the last time we saw them in the 23rd Century. Dr. Burnham did specif that they were still there so who knows how they’ve advanced.

I wonder if even though Control is eliminated if there is still some sort of AI force out there working against organic life. Hence where the probe ame from in the time rift earlier in season two.

I wonder if the Federation still exists? The furthest in the future we know Starfleet still exists is the 29th Century. So there is a chance that it has all been destroyed. WHich raises the question of if this becomes a little bit like Gene Rodenberry’s Andromeda with Discovery needing to pick up the pieces? I’m not sure I like that idea.... On the other hand if that becomes the plot of Michelle Yeoh’s Section 31 show then I am all for that.
Please do me a huge favour and help me be with the love of my life.

I'm also very curious how Tarralysium is going to fit into this. When we met them in Season 2 they were basically colonial-era pioneers (despite their WW3 origins). What will they be after 950 years? A Federation member world? The heart of a new Federation? ...a religious zealot villain world?

I think Control is toast though. I don't expect they'll recycle the same villain.

        *looks stuff up*

Okay, so in the past, the distant future (see what I did there? ) stuff we've seen have been:
        • 26th century - The Battle of Procyon V, although this may be in an averted timeline as a result of how ENT Season 3 concluded.
        • ca. 2666 - The Tox Uthat is invented
        • 28th century - Future Guy (ENT) is from this period
        • 2769 - The Temporal Accords are signed by this time
        • ca. 2875 - The scenes that are set aboard the USS Relativity in the VOY episode Relativity.
        • ca. 3052 - The scenes in the negated future where Daniels and Archer are in the ENT two-parter Shockwave.
        • ca. 3074 - The entire VOY episode Living Witness.
        • 3186 - Dr Burnham is 950 years into the future from her home era of 2236 (assuming it's 950 exactly).
        • 3207 - Discovery Season 3, 950 years after 2257 (Season 2).
        • ???? - USS Discovery has been abandoned for "almost a thousand years." Not clear if it's 1000 years post-S2 (ie 3257) or post-S3 (ie 4257)

So yes....broad, clean canvas for Season 3.

I just rewatched the episode.... didn't burnham set the time coordinates for 930 years in the future so they'd arrive about a year after her mothers anchor point year?

im a little excited about the possibilities of season 3 due to it now being a fully blank canvas rather then be set pre TOS despite the fact I had assumed that it would show the time between the cage and where no man has gone before

You are probably right, Sakura. I remember Michael specifically muttered to herself about how her mother went ahead 950 years, 20 years ago. I probably just missed that Michael corrected for that.

Here is a great new interview with Alex Kurtzman :
              https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/li...lained-1203166
"I was hoping for another day. Looks like we just got a whole lot more than that. Let's not waste it."

"Never underestimate your audience. They're generally sensitive, intelligent people who respond positively to quality entertainment."

"Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today, but the core of science fiction, its essence, has become crucial to our salvation, if we are to be saved at all."

Bits and pieces on Season 3 from an event yesterday...

                Alex Kurtzman:
We knew early [that Discovery would get stranded in the future], actually really early. Part of it was recognizing that there were all these canonical issues that had to be squared away. Why was the Spore Drive never mentioned? Why has Spock never mentioned [his sister]? It goes on and on. At a certain point it became really clear that jumping them either to the distant past or the far future was the only answer. And the minute you starting thinking future, then you have to go further into the future than any Trek show has ever gone, because then you have a brand new opportunity.

                ...

The challenge of season three – without revealing anything – will be how do you reinvent the world and the universe while staying true to everything that Star Trek is?

                Wilson Cruz:
And I love the journey that they took this character on. He didn’t just automatically just jump back in. There were consequences to what happened – for the relationship and for him. And that is going to continue as we go on. Just because at the end of the season they are back together doesn’t mean that his journey of self-discovery doesn’t continue. I think there is more change even ahead and I am excited about exploring that.

                Alex Kurtman again (different link):
Now that we’re free from canon, we get to ask ourselves some incredibly bold, complicated questions. We get to dive deep into our imagination and think about what the universe would look like [930] years.
"A society grows great when old men plant trees, the shade of which they know they will never sit in. Good people do things for other people. That's it, the end." -- Penelope Wilton in Ricky Gervais's After Life

                    Via TrekMovie:

After the season two finale, Star Trek: Discovery executive producer and co-showrunner Michelle Paradise told TrekMovie the USS Discovery’s crew saw the jump forward 930 years as a one-way trip. At a panel at TCA Paradise confirmed the show is staying in the 32nd century, saying (via Slashfilm): “Correct, we’re there and we’re living there.”

Paradise also confirmed they will address the hanging issue of who is the captain of the USS Discovery:
I will remind that in our finale, as Pike was leaving, he said, ‘We are going to need to choose a new captain…’ Saru said, ‘Let’s put a pin in that and see what happens.’ Discovery will need a captain. The pin will need to come out. We will need to address that in story.
                    ...

As for the third season of Discovery, CBS President and COO of CBS Interactive Marc DeBevoise said it will premiere “later” in 2020.

                    ...

At her earlier TCA panel, Discovery co-showrunner Michelle Paradise reconfirmed that production on the previously announced Section 31 series is tied into Discovery, pointing to how that’s the only way it can work with Michelle Yeoh, who will lead the Section 31 show, but is also part of the third season of Discovery, adding: “After [Discovery] wraps, she could go into production [on the Section 31 show].”

Ok so... I have a theory. We know from the trailer that something has happened to the Federation. It's smaller but the guy we see who looks in charge and talks to Burnham doesn't look like he's in dire straights. Where they're talking still looks clean and high tech and kinda utopia-like... So I think this is all to do with the Omega Particle. I think some massive explosion of Omega happened somewhere and cut off the Alpha Quadrant from Warp travel. Enter Discovery with it's Spore Drive and suddenly it's the only ship that can travel because it isn't reliant on subspace. Hence highly sought after and hence Burnham being yet again Starfleet's only hope since it appears in the scene like she may not have met up with Discovery again yet. But if she is the only one who can find it then she will indeed be a hope for the fleet to allow Starfleet to finally rebuild with a fleet of Spore Drive ships.
Please do me a huge favour and help me be with the love of my life.

Wouldn't it be even more topical if they revisited the 'warp limit' from "Force of Nature" -- that nobody listened when the experts said what we were doing was making our world (galaxy) unlivable, and there are dire consequences for that.
