    3rd TV series in development

AMC Confirms Moving Forward With Third ‘Walking Dead’ Series
New program in active development, but no air date

Though ratings for its monster hit The Walking Dead have been flagging in its ninth season, AMC Networks confirmed that it is working on a third series based on its zombie apocalypse universe.

Speaking on the company’s fourth quarter earnings call with analysts, AMC CEO Josh Sapan said “next stage plans” around the new series have begun to take place under Walking Dead chief content officer Scott Gimple and the company has been “overwhelmed” with potential partners for the show.

Sapan said AMC believes The Walking Dead “is some of today’s most valuable intellectual property on any screen anywhere.”

AMC had been running a second zombie series, Fear the Walking Dead. And when Walking Dead co-star Andrew Lincoln left the show last year, AMC said he would be featured in a series of Walking Dead movies that would appear on AMC Network.

Analysts have been concerned about AMC’s dependence on revenue generated by The Walking Dead as the series loses steam. But AMC Networks COO Ed Carroll said the franchise remains strong.

Carroll said “Series Three” under the Walking Dead banner series is now in “active development.

He added it is “not yet at a stage where we’ll be announcing its plans to premiere, but we have hired creative people that have pitched story outlines. We feel very good about the development of that series.”

Carroll would not comment about potential partners for the show, or its ancillary windows. Subscription video on demand rights for Fear the Walking Dead, for example, were sold to Hulu even before the show went on the air.

“There’s a healthy appetite for it and we’ve had discussions with a number of different players in the space, Carroll said.

Carroll noted that The Walking Dead continues to be the top rated show on cable, with an audience that more than doubles the No. 2 show. It is also the second biggest drama on all of TV, behind only NBC’s This Is Us.

“It’s in season nine, so that is unprecedented,” said.

And though ratings are down substantially during the second half of season eight, “the performance of the first three episodes that have aired in February is actually a bit ahead of our estimates. And I would say generally we are well aware that when a show has been around for nine years, you would expect the viewership to be declining. But I think we’ve managed that and managed that well,” he said.

Eventually, the original, flagship Walking Dead series will go off AMC Networks. When that happens. “I think that will have more of an impact on revenue than it will on AOI [adjusted operating income] because generally with shows such as this, expenses go up as the seasons continue and viewership declines. That’s just a general pattern of any show that’s been around for as long as The Walking Dead has,” Carroll told the analysts, But what’s so interesting about this, and it’s never been seen before, it’s still the number one show on cable by such a wide margin in season nine.”

My kids and I were talking about how it should take place in Canada. My daughter said the title should be "The Frozen Walking Dead".

There's a whole world out there, lots of possibilities.

I do like the idea of frozen zombies though

Still-untitled 3rd series just cast three of its leads:

New ‘Walking Dead’ Series Casts Three Lead Roles (EXCLUSIVE)

The recently announced third “Walking Dead” series has cast three major roles, Variety has learned exclusively.

Alexa Mansour, Nicolas Cantu, and Hal Cumpston will all star in the new series, which is said to follow two female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the zombie apocalypse. A second lead female role has yet to be cast.

AMC would not comment on specifics for any of the characters, but sources describe Mansour’s character as a good-natured rule breaker who lives for today. She is likable and funny on the outside but sad on the inside. Mansour recently wrapped shooting a guest starring role on the CBS drama “Madam Secretary” and previously starred in the horror film sequel “Unfiltered: Dark Web” for Blumhouse Productions. Her other TV credits include “SEAL Team,” “The Resident,” “Bull,” “How To Get Away With Murder,” and “Law & Order: SVU.”

She is repped by Paradigm, Zero Gravity, and Play Management.

Cantu’s character is said to be small for his age in addition to being friendly and an old soul. He also has a black belt in karate. Cantu has previously lent his voice to the animated shows “The Amazing World of Gumball,” “Sofia the First,” “Future-Worm!” and “Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures.” He has also appeared in the live-action shows “The Good Place,” “Sydney to the Max,” and “Bizaardvark.”

He is repped by The Osbrink Agency, Monster Talent, and Jackoway Tyerman.

Cumpston’s character is said to be big for his age. He is a shy loner that scares some kids, but he hates the fact that he scares people. Cumpston previously starred in, wrote, and produced the Australian coming of age comedy “Bilched.”

He is repped by Industry Entertainment.

The yet untitled third “Walking Dead” show joins both the flagship show, which is entering its tenth season, and “Fear the Walking Dead,” which is currently airing its fifth. AMC is also currently developing a trio of TV movies centered on Rick Grimes starring Andrew Lincoln. The “Walking Dead” comic book series, which served as the basis for the original show, recently came to an end after nearly two decades.

The series is co-created by Scott Gimple, chief content officer of the “Walking Dead” universe, and Matt Negrete, a writer and producer on “The Walking Dead” for the past five seasons. Negrete will also serve as showrunner. AMC Studios will produce. The series will begin production on its 10 episode first season in Virginia this summer with a planned premiere on AMC in 2020.

              Update from SDCC:

Gimple said that they are going to be exploring more of the post-apocalyptic Walking Dead universe.

“The big secret is that there have been other civilizations that have survived the apocalypse,” revealed Gimple. “We are about to show a lot more.”

Gimple said that they are working on another series of privileged, first-world kids who leave the comfort of their world to go on a quest. Some will become heroes — others not so much. He said the new series will “open up a whole new world.” No further details of the series were given.
