    RIP Graham Strong

    G'day,

Graham with Frazer Hines, aka Jamie, circa 2010

You probably don't know his name, but if you're a fan of Doctor Who, particularly the b&w era, then you have heard his work - even though Graham Strong was only 14 years old when Doctor Who first went to air in 1963!

Graham used a reel-to-reel sound recorder to capture the audio tracks for numerous episodes of Doctor Who. At first he simply dangled a microphone in front of his parent's television set, however as a budding sound technician, he soon wired the two devices together, achieving "line level" quality captures that would oftentimes better the telecine film recordings held by the BBC (for the episodes that they actually now hold copies of at all).

After another fan brought Graham's collection to the attention of the BBC in the 1990's, he agreed to loan the collection to them, and so fans worldwide were able to not only listen to audio-only releases of long-missing-from-the-archives stories - they were also able to watch stories that had previously never been offered, such as The Ice Warriors - missing episodes 2 & 3 - as they BBC could now recreate the episodes using Graham's recordings, together with "telesnap" images captured by a photographer in a not dissimilar, though more commercial enterprise.

Sadly Graham has just recently passed away. We owe him so much!
