    why not through the floor-solved

    I answered this back in the old scifi BB, but I don't think it was answered here, so here is the answer again;

question: why don't they fall through the floor when they are out phase with regular matter?

this was a conundrum, as with the bugs that were from the other realm, when Jonas touched the thing found on the planet and then started to spread the ability to see them around, they were out of phase with regular matter too, BUT, they could crawl on top of things and land on things in our reality and not go through them, WHY, you may as well ask, the answer is simple

answer: gravity crosses ALL realms, a floor here is a floor there, ground here is ground there, gravity may hold the tree to the ground, but it doesn't keep it from growing, that is how the bugs could go through one thing and still land on it, the same goes for people too.

    No.

A tree is kept in place because of two opposing forces: gravity tries to pull it to the core, whereas repulsion between atoms prevents it from collapsing too far.

If gravity crosses all realms, then anyone phasing would immediately start falling to the core regardless.

There is a simple answer: intangibility rules are arbitrary and work however the story thinks they should work.

That bugs me too but you have to ignore some things to make the story work. For example when they go out of phase how do they breathe? With the crystal skull Daniel comments he doesn't feel hungry or thirsty. On the other hand when Sam and Mitchell are out of phase from Merlin's device Mitchell makes a comment on not being able to eat or drink anything.

Carter said when you are out of Phase you are in another dimension so maybe this dimension is void of everything but gasses to breath and magical floors.

yeah, ok, I will give you that thing about the story.

        BUT

as for the gravity, think of it like jello and you are the little pieces of fruit, and as for why you don't breathe or eat or OTHER bodily functions, that is simple, your body is turned off, aside from walking or talking, you don't need to do any other things, the FEW things they can effect when out of phase were made to be used when out of phase more than likely made of some multi dimensional element like Nth metal, or what ever the SG equal is.

I don't get your jello argument. If gravity were turned off, you'd fly off the planet at high speeds. Besides, walking only works when the specific interaction between gravity and the floor exists.

If your body is turned off, how can Daniel speak? How can he walk, how can he do anything?

Really, the best solution to Intangibility is simply: Magic. It works that way because viewers expect it to work that way. These kind of "Solutions" only create more problems than the initial "why don't they fall through the floor or fall off the planet".

Pretty much, yea. But if Daniel can see the others, and himself, why is that light not casting a shadow on the walls and floors in the non-phased dimension. And if a "ghost" of non-phased people exists in the phased dimension, why can they be seen but not interacted with?

Basically, the alternate dimension argument suggests there's a parallel universe that's the same in every conceivable way, except some people and objects selectively can be seen but not touched, for some reason.

Think of things in terms of force. You have a cup of jello, the gravity is pulling the fruit down but the jello itself is pushing it back up. It is pushing back with the exact amount of force gravity is pulling down. As a result, it stays in place. This 'staying in place' requires physical interaction with the jello.

Now, let's say it is as you said and gravity is felt across all planes. In order to not fall through the floor is to have an equal opposite force pushing back against you. Normally, that is the floor beneath you. The equal and opposite force requires physical interaction with said floor. If you could not touch the floor, then there is nothing pushing you against gravity. There is no jello-force to hold you in place. Air does not have the properties to hold you. Water can slow you but ultimately you still drop. If there was some other dimensional fluid that holds you in place vertically, it would also hold you in place laterally, meaning you can't move. And it would not abide by others laws such as stairs and whatever the terrain is.

As for the eating thing...I'm confused. No matter what happens, a person needs energy. I could paralyze you and you'd still need to eat. You don't need to use to the muscles to burn energy. Even when not being used, muscles still consume energy. Walking and talking will consume energy. Not to mention the moment a section of the body is turned off, it begins to decay.
