G'day,
How long did each actor play the Doctor, I hear you ask?
1963-66 William Hartnell
29 Stories, 134 episodes, 55 hrs 15min
1966-69 Patrick Troughton
21 Stories, 119 episodes, 47 hrs 19 min
1970-74 Jon Pertwee
24 Stories, 128 episodes, 51 hrs 53 min
1974-81 Tom Baker
41 Stories, 172 episodes, 71 hrs 37 min
1982-84 Peter Davison
20 Stories, 68 episodes*, 31 hrs 37 min
1984-86 Colin Baker
11 Stories, 31 episodes*, 17 hrs 9 min
1987-89 Sylvester McCoy
12 Stories, 36 episodes, 17 hrs 27 min
1996 Paul McGann
2 Stories, 2 episodes*, 1 hr 12 min
2005 Christopher Eccleston
10 Stories, 13 episodes, 9 hrs 31 min
2005-10 David Tennant
34 Stories, 45 episodes, 38 hrs 11 min
2010-13 Matt Smith
36 Stories, 41 episodes, 34 hrs 34 min
2014-17 Peter Capaldi
30 Stories, 36 episodes, 27 hrs*
Notes:
Originally episodes were approx 20-25min duration.
Peter Davison's time included 1 story at 90min, and 1 story that consisted of 2 x 45min episodes.
Colin Baker's time had a mixture of 25min and 45min episodes (5 and 6 respectively).
Paul McGann's time consisted of 1x 88min adventure and 1x 8 minute adventure, however he only appeared part-way into the 88min movie, so that's why his time is truncated.
2005 marked change to typically 45 min duration, however some have reached 60 min, plus Day of the Doctor at 77min.
Capaldi's exact time is yet to be confirmed.
During the classic era, 4 actors played the Doctor for 3 years (1st, 2nd, 5th, 7th), however the actual screen-time varied greatly, with as little as 17 hours for Sylvester, and 55 hours for William. The 3rd and 4th actors held the role for longer periods, of 5 and 7 years respectively, and poor Colin only had 2 full years, plus 1 story tacked to the end of Davison's run.
In the new era, aside from Eccleston, each Doctor has played the role for essentially 3 "seasons", although they all held the title for 4 years. (Tennant is listed as 2005-10, however 05 was only the Christmas Special).
When will we see a new era Doctor get past that 3 season stretch...? Many of us had hoped it would be Capaldi, staying across 2 showrunners... but no...
cheers
