B5 Books Announces The Babylon 5 Encyclopedia

Okay so I have been out of the loop for awhile and not posting too much on Gateworld; and this is a little late - sorry. Here is the latest and possibly one of the greatest offerings the B5Books Team has come up with.

The Babylon 5 Encyclopedia - "For the first time ever, the whole canon of Babylon 5"

    http://b5books.com/

So this is available two ways:

Online Media Edition or 2-Volume Hardcover Color Edition . . . Or Both (You know I ordered BOTH!)

The price for both is a bit high, but when you consider what you are getting and that this is basically a made-to-order collectible done by a small group of people who just want to keep the Babylon 5 Universe vibrant then it really doesn't seem like that much if you are a fan. It also doesn't hurt that this item promises to be something that I've wanted to see since I first started watching the show in 1995.

$98 for access to a website that's, really, just the B5 Wiki but behind a login? That's ludicrous.

But the $148 cost of the hardcover is actually quite reasonable--by comparison, the 2-volume Star Trek Encyclopedia (the new version that just came out a few months ago) is currently priced at $168 on Amazon.ca. I may just buy it once I have a few free pennies!
"A society grows great when old men plant trees, the shade of which they know they will never sit in. Good people do things for other people. That's it, the end." -- Penelope Wilton in Ricky Gervais's After Life

I think that is a bit of a simplification when you consider all of the resources, including the creator of the show, that this is drawing from. I mean there are thousands of wiki pages out there without a fraction of the resources and effort behind this.

        BIG UPDATE ! ! !

The the final date to order with the Pre-Order discount is March 31st.

And the launch date has been moved back 90 days to September 30, 2017

"This is my fault. I under-estimated the time to go through all the images being supplied by Production Designer John Iacovelli, one of our many sources. Instead of the 6,500 images estimated we are instead scanning 37,000 frames of negatives at 4,000 dpi which then have to be individually cataloged."

Here is a little trailer they have for it.

I used to think B5 was great, and to be fair; I am still fond of the original series, but this book will be pointless as the latter series were garbage and there were too many plot holes in the original series. It's stated that the Shadows returned to Za,ha,dum, but we are then told that the Icarus expedition awoke them and then we are shown a shadow vessel collect another shadow vessel, fly to Za,ha,dum and the Icarus expedition follows them. In The Lost Tales, we see the Valen has a Quantum Drive and acquired this technology from the Vorlons even though there is no reference to it previously.

            Hyperspace Funnels

A hyperspace funnel is a mode of hyperspace travel known to have occasionally been employed by the Shadows. The method had long been only theorised by the younger races and involves the creation of a sort of wormhole in hyperspace, a subsystem or subroute with one beginning point and one end point. The funnel itself can only be accessed by a specifically built type of jumpgate and take an unusually enormous amount of power to open. When a ship enters a funnel it is forcibly propelled along the pre-determined route, offering no possibility of delay or detour before being thrown out into normal space at the terminus and while in the funnel itself, ships are undetectable to any other ships in local hyperspace. The limitations of funnels mean that they have a very limited utility but can be useful in creating a pathway for moving ships undetected to a specific place. The Shadows built just such a pathway to access their hidden base of Xha'dam, burring the gateway on a planet known only as K0643. In 2266, after several years of excavation, the gateway was uncovered by the Centauri at the unknowing behest of the Drakh, thus allowing them to access the base of their old masters and gain access to the Death Clouds stored there. When the gate opened, the massive discharge of energy and maelstrom of atmospheric disruption killed most of the surviving Centauri workers who's numbers had already dwindled as the buried machine had been quietly killing off stragglers for years.[17]

I really don't want to oversell this, but the online edition Beta went up this weekend and OMG is it great. I don't know, maybe it just strikes a chord with me, but I can't stop looking at all of this great B5 reference material. The physical books haven't started to ship yet so I can't speak to their quality, but WOW does the online edition appear to be right on course to be as awesome as they promised.
