I think the more important question is did the owner read and understand the owner's manual description of how to shift the vehicle and the mechanism malfunctioned or did the owner not bother to rtfm and assumed that he knew how to operate it?
If the former, fine, hang Chrysler out to dry. By rights, they should have gone out of business in 1979 anyway. But if the latter, that's on the owner, not the manufacturer.
