    Ah lets revert back to the supernatural themes again. Not exactly science fiction, but then science fiction does deal often when things that cant be explained. This next series is best encapsulated in the title of one of its episodes 'Something Wicca This Way Comes'. Its actual title though is

    No 236. CHARMED (1998-2006)

    This series was to become WB's second most popular and long lasting series made covering eight seasons and 178 episodes. It created a phenomenon that led to video games, comic strips, books and Board games and won many TV related awards. It also did much to assist the actresses involved to enhance their acting careers.

    The story begins with one of the three sisters involved returning home to Halliwell Manor, the family home of the girls' upbringing. She gets together with her two sisters and together they seem to be living a normal life in downtown San Francisco. But one day one of the young women finds a book in the attic called Book of Shadows and thinking its just a fun book of charms and spells she reads a part at the begin which turns out to be an incantation. What is revealed is that our three carefree young suburban lasses are in fact the three most powerful witches in the World and together as The Power of Three they are virtually invincible...virtually but not entirely.

    So each of our pretty young things suddenly realise their powers which develop as time passes. Prue (Shannon Doherty), the eldest, develops the power of telekinesis and astral projection. Piper (Holly Marie Combs) develops the power to freeze people and things for a period and even to make bad guys explode. Phoebe (Alyssia Milano), the youngest develops premonition, past and future and later levitation and other goodies. Together they are all powerful. And they suddenly realise that the World is full of all sorts of nasties, such as demons, warlocks and other nasty naughties that go bump in the night and they become the saviours of those people being harassed by these irritable nuisances. But their main nemesis is The Source of All Evil that in the third season sends one of its nasty reps, who manages to kill Prue (Obviously Shannon wanted out for other opportunities).

    But surprise surprise. The remaining two witches have a half sister (you see Mum was the mother witch and all four were her daughters). This one is called Paige (Rose McGowen) and surprise surprise she has some of Prue's abilities such as telekinesis. And wait, there's more. She also has a Guardian Angel to add to the fun.

    Of course all of these battles with the forces of evil have to be done as secretly as possible, because the girls continue to lead an everyday normal life as seen by the public, though the police and FBI become increasingly suspicious.

    A fun show and like Buffy, appealed more to the teens and twenties set, though I would suspect many an older male may also have enjoyed the young actresses ply their craft,. The series is available on DVD. Fun fare. Worth a look.

      Its regrettable that the BBC tended in the 60s to wipe their programmes so they could use the tape for other shows and many interesting series were lost. Many early Dr Who episodes faced this demise with only a few episodes remaining. Another short SciFi series where only four of the ten episodes seem to have survived was;

      No 237. COUNTERSTRIKE (1969)

      Hopefully the episodes of the monochrome mini series will eventually come to DVD. You can see part of one episode on the net but its likely the other six episodes have disappeared for ever.

      Counterstrike was set a little in the future and had some quite stylish settings. It involves a private detective called Simon King (Jon Finch) who specialises in particular investigations that turn out to be plots by aliens called Centaurans, who world as become uninhabitable, and who are looking to destroy humanity to take over the World for themselves. They use controlled humans to do their bidding so dont expect aliens running around.

      But it so happens that Simon is actually an alien himself, an agent of the Galactic Council that oversees the systems in this part of the Galaxy, and its his job to thwart these Centauran refugees plans. He has a human sidekick, Mary (Sarah Blanchett), and together they root out the nefarious plans of these ne'er do well alien bad guys. Of course the Galactic Council's main aim is territorial, to protect their systems, the humans are a secondary concern.

      Unfortunately the show, which owes much to The Invaders, didnt take off and was cancelled. But apparently is was a fairly classy piece of work and therefore unfortunate that most of it is now lost.
