Alfre Woodard finalizing deal to play villainess Minetta in the Luke Cage series.

Woodard has had an extensive acting career, but genre fans like us might recognize her as Amy Granderson in The Last Ship, Dr Claudia Villars in K-PAX, or as Lily from Star Trek: First Contact.

Marvel's LUKE CAGE Casts Theo Rossi as the Villainous Shades

Marvel’s Netflix-exclusive Luke Cage has found itself another villain!

With Mike Colter on board to play the titular Power Man, Deadline is reporting that Cloverfield’s Theo Rossi is to play Shades in the show. Whilst Shades will trouble Cage, it’s already been confirmed that Black Mariah, played by True Blood’s Alfre Woodard, will be the main villain of the show.

As for Shades, he first appeared way back in a 1972 issue of Luke Cage, Hero for Hire. After breaking out of prison, the rogue ends up becoming the owner of a visor that allows him to fire optic blasts.

The third of Marvel’s Netflix-exclusive shows, Luke Cage will follow Daredevil and Jessica Jones (in which Colter’s Cage will actually debut), premiering next year and to be followed by Iron Fist and then the Defenders mini-series.

LUKE CAGE Finds its Misty Knight

Fresh off the news yesterday that the show had cast the villainous Shades, today brings word that Marvel’s Netflix-exclusive Luke Cage has found its Misty Knight.
Deadline is reporting that the relatively-unknown Simone Missick has been cast as a character called Missy, but who it has been confirmed is the show’s take on Misty Knight. The comic book Misty made her debut back in 1975’s Marvel Premiere #21, created by Tony Isabella and Arvell Jones. Initially depicted as an NYPD cop, a bomb explosion would leave her without one of her arms. Ever the helpful sort, Tony Stark stepped in to construct a bionic arm for Misty. Since then, she’s largely worked alongside Luke Cage and Iron First, even becoming a love interest for the latter.

To debut next year, Luke Cage sees Mike Colter in the titular role (he’ll actually make his debut in the Krysten Ritter-starring Jessica Jones), Theo Rossi as Shades, and Alfre Woodard as Black Mariah. Also confirmed to appear is Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple, last seen in the brilliant Daredevil.

Marvel's LUKE CAGE Adds Cornell Cottonmouth

With several new additions already revealed earlier this week, Marvel’s Netflix-exclusive Luke Cage has now found its Cornell Cottonmouth.
To be known in the show as Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes, the rogue will be played by The Hunger Games’ Mahershala Ali. Created by Len Wein and George Tuska, the comic book Cottonmouth (not to be confused with Serpent Society’s villain of the same name…) debuted back in 1974’s Power Man #19 as a no-good pimp and drug lord. In Marvel’s upcoming Luke Cage show, Cottonmouth is officially described as “a Harlem nightclub owner who will become an unexpected foe in Luke’s life when Stokes’ criminal activities threaten Luke’s world.”

With Mike Colter starring as the titular Cage, the show’s roster is also currently made up of Alfre Woodard as the series’ main villain, Black Mariah, and then there’s Theo Rossi as rogue Shades and Simone Missick as Misty Knight, herself one of the good guys. Additionally, it’s been confirmed that Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple from Daredevil will making an appearance in Luke Cage.

After Cage debuts in the Krysten Ritter-starring Jessica Jones early next year, he’ll go on to headline his own show later on in 2016.

LUKE CAGE casts Frank Whaley as Det. Rafe Scarfe

Over the last fortnight or so, it seems that barely a day goes by when one of Marvel’s Netflix-exclusive shows doesn’t add to its cast.

With that said, today brings word, courtesy of Deadline, that Luke Cage has brought in Under the Dome’s (and famously-yet-briefly Pulp Fiction’s) Frank Whaley as Detective Rafael Scarfe. A character directly from the comic book realm, Scarfe was created by Chris Claremont and Pat Broderick way back in 1975’s Marvel Premiere #23. “Rafe” Scarfe was at one point an NYPD partner of Misty Knight and has helped Cage at numerous times over the years.

Taking the titular role in Luke Cage is Mike Colter, with Alfre Woodard cast as the show’s big bad, Black Mariah. Theo Rossi is also on board to play the villainous Shades, Mahershala Ali is signed on to play rogue Cornell Cottonmouth, and Simone Missick is confirmed in the role of Missy, the show’s take on the aforementioned Misty Knight.

The Cage character will debut early next year in the Krysten Ritter-headlined Jessica Jones before then having his own show arrive in the second half of 2016.

    Some other bits and pieces:

After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city – forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.
Theo Rossi (“Sons of Anarchy,” “Bad Hurt”) has joined the cast as Shades, a ruthless criminal with ties to Cage’s mysterious past.

"Theo Rossi is a swiss army knife--no matter what you bring to him, he has a tool for it--and he’s playfully unpredictable,” said series Executive Producer and Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker. “His Shades will be someone you hate to love.”
Frank Whaley (“Ray Donovan,” “Pulp Fiction”) has been cast as Rafael Scarfe, a hard-nosed NYPD detective who partners with Misty Knight in their Luke Cage investigation.

“Frank Whaley has a wiry intensity that he’s imbued in Det. Rafael Scarfe,” said Coker. “He’s a great counterpart to Misty, and a wonderful actor.”
Actress Rosario Dawson, celebrated for her work in “Top Five,” “Sin City,” and “Kids,” will reprise her role from “Marvel’s Daredevil” as nurse Claire Temple. Her blossoming friendship with Luke Cage will have a major impact on both characters’ lives.
[Alfre] Woodard will play Mariah Dillard, a local Harlem politician--and cousin to recently announced Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes (Mahershala Ali)--who is looking to bring a new era of change to the streets she grew up on. Her personal life and professional career are thrown into turmoil by both Harlem's newest hero Luke Cage as well as her cousin Cottonmouth's nefarious acts.

Just because it looks like you're talking to yourself, I'll say something

Frank Whaley is a good actor, I just can't see him in a Marvel show. That being said, I will never say no to good talent coming to the Netflix shows.

Marvel really intends to have a monopoly on actors.

    So...

I thought the first 6-7 episodes of this were amazing. Simply some of the best that Netflix/Marvel have made.

But the second half of the season? Holy frak what a mess. Really, really bad.

I've watched 1 and 2 so far. I am really liking it. But seriously, you'd think they'd learn after what happened with Fisk?

I struggled to stay awake for the first episode but it thankfully picked up by the second episode. I agree that show lost something toward the end of the season (especially with one of the worst vilians ever) but I overall enjoyed it.

They really should have held Diamondback until a second season and developed him better because they wasted both that actor and Cottonmouth's.

Once again Netflix has a great formula for these but they should have really been 10 episode seasons rather than 13.

Finally finished this, enjoyed it, but not as good as the others.

I really like Luke Cage and Shades though.
