In TOS era Trek, you're probably right. But by the time of TNG, things appear to have changed. Recall Picards's speech to Lily in "First Contact"; he was going on about the acquisition of wealth no longer driving people's behavior. That speech leads me to believe that in that time, it is a socialist/communist system.

Did Sisko's family own a restaurant? Also did someone in picard's family own a farm?

Dunno, never got into DS9. But Picard's family did have a vineyard at some point. But was that current time or was it a flashback or something?

Picard's brother ran it until he died in Generations. And blasphemy for not watching DS9.

I'm just joining the thread. I would do it...IF...society/technology was developed like it is in Star Trek. Heck, I would even settle for Kirk era society/technology.

well consider that at the time TOS first came about....our computers were these big monstrous things that took up entire rooms most of the time....the computing technology we have now probably already far outstrips what they had to work with when making the computers for the original starship Enterprise

if we ever make anything like a Constitution-class starship its computing technology would probably be more advanced than even the computers in the Constitution-class refit

which would probably make Capt. Picard the de facto owner of Chateau Picard I'd wager....which probably means it wouldn't last long since I don't think starship captains have much time for running vineyards

Imagine how much memory the computer would need for just one holodeck program.

Those computers that filled entire rooms held megabytes of data..

A modern smart phone probably has more computing power than Kirk's Enterprise. The writers probably looked at the computers being used by NASA, with their immense 2mb storage capacity and concluded that if they're good enough to get people into space, then anything over 10mb would be needlessly excessive. They couldn't have predicted how quickly computer technology would advance.

Even Picard's Enterprise would struggle to keep up with the computers we have today.

It really depends on how the holodeck generates the images. Are they holograms or real objects? It's possible to eat holodeck food, and get wet from the holodeck water. There was one episode where they couldn't turn off the program (I know that doesn't narrow it down ) because the crew members that were in there would disappear along with the projected characters.

But then Moriarty couldn't leave the holodeck because there were no holo-emitters in the hallway. So does it generate some things as real objects using the same reintegration systems as the transporter and replicators, and others as holograms?

The holograms would have to be stored as 3D models, with textures and sound files, and animations, or at least a program to allow procedural generation of animation sub-routines based on the simulated muscle and bone structure of the person/creature.

Real objects could be stored in a similar way to transporter patterns, if it uses the same process to recreate them. It wouldn't have to store all the chemicals the objects are made of, just the information about how much of each one to use and how to put them back together.

I always wondered about that. A big question was that if it does get replicated, why don't you hear the replicator sound or see the shimmering effect? I guess it wouldn't be too hard to hide that though.

About the water, didn't characters once walk out and still wet?

A modern big expansive game takes up to 60 GB or even a bit more. What would it take to render a realistic Kitchen with all it has, from all angles in different layers while saving information like texture, taste, molecular structures (should I eat anything)...There is so much that has made me question if Holodecks are even feasible.

Yes. At least I hope it is.

I would absolutely want to live in the UFP (if I can bring my boyfriend).
