No he was not. The old stories are non-canon--they don't count at all any more. All that counts now is what's been written/produced since Disney hit the reset button last spring.
Kylo Ren is a new character created for TFA. While the story borrows (heavily) from certain Expanded Universe characters from the old books, those characters no longer exist in the new, Disney canon Star Wars universe.
