This decision doesn't do that. It just says that everything released, aired, screened, written, and illustrated from now on is part of the canon, and 'oh by the way, everything else that's been created for the last 30 years doesn't count anymore.'

Well look at it from their point of view. When the new movies come out, it's likely gonna make a lot of books non-canon anyways. So they're just thinking "out with the old, in with the new" and fire the Death Star on the whole thing.

Fortunately the good thing about Disney is despite the insidious grip they keep on their franchises, they do tend to let producers and writers who have a lot of passion for their respective projects take the reigns.
