What's up with the Sci-fi channel (in the US only)

Hey, back in August, I made a post about the Sci-fi channel in the US, basically saying its programming sucked (except for BSG and Stargate) and it had no clue what kind of shows to put on.

If you live in the US and have Sci-fi, you know this already and it shouldn't be surprising to you. They have the worst made-for-tv movies and their miniseries are usually lackluster, but occasionally, they produce good ones like BSG or Taken.

However, if you ignore the bad programming, one thing you can't ignore is the bad advertising. I don't know for sure, but I would guess that Sci-fi's primary demographic is younger people, from 13 to about 35 or so. That's my guess. Both male and female, but probably more male than female would be my guess too. If I'm right, then why does sci-fi play so many Viagara, Levitra, and Enzyte (man, I hate that stupid ass Enzyte commercial with that retard "This is Bob and Bob has an erection...woopity doo!") commercials, mortgage commercials, and other commercials that have nothing to do with the demographics. MTV seems to target my age group pretty good (15-25), and so do other channels that know younger people are watching (WB, UPN, Fox), but sci-fi is ridiculous!

I mean, I'm 20 years old, the last thing that I need is something to get wood, I need the opposite (sorry, I know, TMI, but hey...). I am in college, I don't need ditech.com to get a mortgage. The commercials they air seem really inappropriate. Do you agree or is it me?

Also, why must they play that Enzyte commerical over and over and over again and two in a row. It's a double commercial!

Does the sci-fi channel employ anyone who knows how to program? Man, if it weren't for Friday night, I would never watch that channel, would you? Also, the shows they play during the day, all day, are mostly lame. Old ST: TOS, Code Name Eternity, Roar...wtf? Where's the old BSG, Buck Rogers, Six Million DOllar man, V, Alien Nation, and a ton of others they could show that they used to show?

    What are your thoughts?

I have seen both the old BSG and Buck Rogers on their daytime line up.

I don't Sci-Fi is the only channel to have commercials that are not appropriate for the target audience. And why do we have to have the same commercial over and over and over in one hour.

I have a 12-year old son and there is nothing more hysterical than to see his buddies over and all of them pondering the possibilities of . . ."four HOURS!?!?!?" Gotta admit though. .those "dysfunctional" ads are disgusting, along with the ones for feminine products that seem to be on every channel.

Sci-Fi draws a LOT of kids and I don't see any reason to put those kinds of ads on that channel. I know they need the ad bucks, but they really have to be careful of their audience - especially on Friday and Saturday nights when kids can stay up late.

When all else fails, change channels.

My point exactly. You should hear the comments in my dorm every Friday when watching SG-1 to BSG. We're all 18-21 year old guys, the last thing we need to hear about is Enzyte or other male enhancement pills. It's stupid and out of target. Feminine hygine products, Flomax prostate pills, Ditech mortgage, and other offensive ones are just inappropriate for the age demographics. If you wanna target old men with erectile dysfunction, play your ads on the Golf Channel or PBS or something, not Sci-fi.

I haven't seen BSG or Buck Rogers or any other old sci-fi show on Sci-fi for a long time. LONG time. Their daytime lineup is crap, just like their night time line up (Scare Tactics, Ghosthunters, Proof Positive). ARRGGGH.

I hate ALL commercials. Everytime an ad block comes on (any channel) I get up and do something else (like take a whizz or get a drink) OR I channel surf for the 3-4 mins worth of commercials.

One of SCI FI's big ad demographics that they tout is men age 25 to 54. College students are a relatively small percentage of their audience. When you're in your late 20s and 30s you'll be looking for mortgage info. And when you're in your 50s ...

Like any network, they also sell ads to most anyone who will buy them. Advertisers are customers. Blame the weirdos at Enzyte for deciding where to advertise their product.

Sci-Fi's commercials do irritate everyone in my household Friday nights too. The one thing I don't understand that is if Stargate and BSG are at the top of the cable networks, you think they'd be getting a wide-enough pallette of advertizing to not have to repeat the same commercials about eight or nine times in the 3-hour blocks that 'Gate and BSG run in. I thought that was the whole point of winning great ratings - more people coming to you for advertising. I guess I'm just a loon.

I wish SciFi would just stop making bad movies. They have so many good ideas, that they should just follow through on. Like Riverworld! That movie was awesome! And they gave up on it! Why?! Why would you replace it Riverworld with Boa Vs Python!? I have to say thought, SLIPSTREAM looks really good.

Other than Friday Nights, SciFi really has nothing. It used to have unrated anime shows in the morning, which used to kick any other morning show's butts. It should bring them back. Or maybe play them on like Thursday nights or something.

I do share this complaint (Just didn't want to be the first to mention it) Snakehead Terror? Raptor Island? Frankenfish??? (Gimme a BREAK) It's almost as if Sci-Fi is willing to expend considerable monies in visual-effects garbage to just come out with mediocre ratings. All of these films have to be kicking out similar results. Every one of these original films are exactly the same thing.

                    Man awakens monster.
                    Monster eats man.
Small band of survivors ... survive.
Cliche egg hatches at end, opening doors for sequels.

Even the upcoming David Palffy film about insects that SciFi is doing sent tiny pin pricks of shivers down my spine. I will only watch it because David is in it.

Science Fiction is one of the broadest fantasyscapes of human civilization, and they are blowing it on hundred-foot crocodiles.

Yep, that's oneof my biggest complaints is that the channel has a great deal of potential, but for whatever reason, doesn't take advantage of it. I would think it could, at the very least, bolster its ratings by either spending its money on acquiring interesting old SCI-FI (note the SCI-FI here, not horror movies or Flintstones movies ala viva las bedrock or whatever) series like Buck Rogers, old BSG, Bionic whatever, Robotech, V, Alien Nation, Logan's Run, etc. It could play those shows during the day or on the weekends, stop spending money on crap movies it makes, and then invest into other ideas.

More Stargate spinoffs? A remake of buck rogers done well, maybe? Producing Kenneth Johnson's V: The Second Generation? It could even buy the rights to Enterprise if it tried hard enough.

The advertising is a different story, but the commericals are so annoying that I have to switch to another channel and sometimes I miss a mintute or so of SG-1 as a result. It's frustrating.

And yes I remember Robotech on Scifi mornings. They should bring that back.

Scare Tactics is cheap to produce and still pulls in quite an audience. RBION in this an previous incarnations all have the virtue of low cost and high profit. It's called show business .

I can only wish! UPN really screwed the pooch when they moved STE to Friday nights in the same block as SG-1. I have to wait until 11pm CST on Sundays to catch the new epis because I will not miss SG-1! Tho' I could watch STE then switch to Sci Fi and catch Atlantis and BSG, then watch the 2nd showing of SG-1 at 10pm.
