This isn't a bash at previous Torchwood, not at all, before anyone suggests that.
No no, I've always liked Torchwood's characterisation... (especially in CoE)
But I have to say, Esther is a wonderful character. And it's a crime that more people don't realise this. I see people complain about how she should have realised the consequences of her actions, how she's not tough enough, despite working for the CIA... etc etc. What people fail to realise is that, actually, she's one of the most realistic Intelligence organisation based characters I have ever seen on any TV show. She's an INT analyst for a start, not a field operative. Already we need to accept that she's not Jane Bond, but people have this thing where they assume that if you work for an INT/Military organisation you're an action hero by default. Newsflash, no - not unless you're part of a highly specialised unit (i.e SAS or such like). The majority of such people, the people that keep such organisations running, are normal people working in a normal looking office doing a routine, if top secret, job. Esther is perfect. So - yeah, bully for Torchwood not going down the all too obvious route of having all CIA-like characters being superhuman.
