One thing that has often puzzled me about the Stargate universe is the glyphs on the Stargate. Are they different on each world's gate or do they all have the same set of symbols, with one unique one for the point of origin? In the movie, its stated that the glyphs on the abydos gate are different from those on the earth gate. This is never really addressed in the series, as far as I recall, but I usually guess that Stargates have the same symbols, since presumably they were built in one place (earth) and seeded on other worlds. It would also explain how SG-1 is able to gateaway from other planets without much trouble. Does anyone have any idea how this works?

the theory is that 38 of the 39 are the same, but that 39th is the point of origin for htat particular planet.
Kate over at rdanderson.com has the glyphs laid out

navigate to stargate sg1, then glyphs and you'll see how they are on the gate and DHD, along with various canon points of origin and addresses
