~ When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take back the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! WITH THE LEMONS! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that BURNS YOUR HOUSE DOWN! ~

Yes, I agree with everyone else that this episode was bursting with epicness. I had been waiting for the dragons to hatch, and they are so cute! Yay, I'm so excited to see what happens there. It's also made me inpatient for the final Eragon book.
So do we know one way or the other if the witch caused Drogo's wound to become infected in the first place, or whether it is ambiguous? Does the book explain this (I haven't read them)?

in the show she as much as confessed. that she'd already been raped 3 times, that the dothraki had destroyed her house/temple, that they needed to die, as did Dany's child, because the 'stallion that would mount the world' could never live.
now whether she actively poisoned him, or just chose not to heal him (as in gave him a placebo instead of a real drug) i think is open to interpretation.
but either way, dany learned a harsh lesson about desperation and trusting hte wrong people

Dany honestly believed she saved Mirri, at least from being "more" raped. I think her naivety lead her to believe that she had done a noble act and that there was some sort of bond between them because of it. I don't blame Dany for Drogo's demise, although it was ultimately her doing.sigpic

I think also, while she certainly looks older in the show (likely because of child porn squicks and laws) IIRC, in the book she was 13 maybe? She was a child and had a child's trust. 'i do you a good turn, you do the same'.
Mirri took advantage of that...and drogo indulged it. he could have told her no when it came to 'saving' the women. Or had jonah ? Jorah? take her aside with 'this is how it is'. but he indulged her in stopping his men, in fighting the challenger, in giving in to mirri treating him....dude was a man and warrior and leader, he could have stopped at any time, but did not
on the other hand, his death was the catalyst to making her take her power and the birth of the dragons. I wonder if they will have the attitudes of the three 'lives' sacrificed? warrior like drogo, trusting like dany, deceitful like Mirri? (no, i haven't read the books, not that far yet)
we did see, however, in mirri's death that Dany learned her harsh lesson and likely won't be fooled again. she executed mirri, quite painfully, out of revenge and retribution

I don't know if I'd call it necessarily revenge or retribution--more like justice to me. By saving Mirri, Dany did something that she thought was good and Mirri took advantage of it. Whether by action or inaction, Mirri caused Drogo's death. In desperation, Dany sought Mirri's help and Mirri was directly responsible for her son Rhaego's demise. Mirri was indirectly or directly involved in two deaths through deceit and treachery. I think that in Dany's eyes, putting Mirri to death was the just thing.
Now of course, creating justice in a continent like Essos, where pillaging, slavery, and other serious problems run rampant, it's a difficult matter at best. But given that she freed the slaves at the end and declared the remnants of Drogo's khalasar as brothers and sisters, I personally think that that Dany would be an effective bearer of justice and compassion to a continent that's otherwise mired in slavery.Last edited by Cold Fuzz; 30 June 2011, 11:11 PM.sigpic

Real life is still kicking my butt, but I have to comment on this episode.
I've been reading around the web and some wondered why the season didn't end with Ned's death since that was such a dramatic moment, but I much prefer this ending to last week's. Although episode 9 would have been a strong ending, it would have left too many dangling threads, IMO, especially among those who haven't read the books. By killing off the character that was seen as the lead character just before the end of the season and then following up with an episode that clearly showed the consequences of his death, this series has shown that it isn't dependent on the survival of one character.
The beauty of this series for me, so far, is that there are so many moving parts that losing one doesn't hurt the show. And, I say that as someone who only started watching Game of Thrones for Jason Momoa, Sean Bean and Lena Headey. Jason and Sean's characters are dead and Lena's character seems to be becoming less of a factor in the overall scheme of things. Yet, because all the characters are so carefully woven into the fabric of the show, I'm still enjoying it.
This episode ratcheted up the tension that had been building throughout the season and as a result ended with several epic moments, and small moments, to tide me over until the beginning of season 2.sigpic

Finally I managed to catch up with the final episode. Hot dang! The ending was superb. This time it didn't make me climb walls or pull out my hair (like a few other episode endings did), but that must've been because of the epicness, that made me melt into a puddle of goo. The music! Oh wow.

I like it when it's not the 'tune in to see who lives' cliff hanger. True, many characters' fates are in the air, but it's very much that 'tune in next week' kind of suspense. Like there's a natural pause - the calm after the storm so to speak.
Dany and the dragons was good. Those people are going to see her as all but a god. she survived a night in the flames and emerged 'reborn' so to speak, with 3 mythical creatures as her, well pets is the wrong word but I can't come up with it right now.
even if robert's death means the end of the assassins, her having those dragons will bring them back, because all of a sudden she's a threat and i would imagine there'll be the urge to kill the dragons before they grow up
