    "The 9th chevron to Earth"

Okay, this isn't a plot hole at all... but it is an annoying goof by the writers that keeps coming up. Whenever the crew dials Earth, they refer to it as "dialing the ninth chevron to Earth." The problem with this?

Dialing Earth only requires 8 symbols, as evidenced in "Air" when Riley notes Earth's address in the database. It's an 8 symbol address, which makes sense since the 9th chevron is only used for one thing; the code to reach Destiny.

    Anyone else noticed this?

    The line was:
Yes, it's an eight-symbol address....There's no point of origin indicated, but still, there's only thirty-six symbols on this 'gate. I'm assuming the ninth symbol represents some x-factor distance equation.

Hmm, but even that doesn't make sense. Rush said in "Air" that there's only one nine chevron address, the one to the ship. So why isn't the one back to Earth eight? It doesn't make sense then.

Do you have a quote? The only reference to a nine chevron address I could find in Air was before they had even successfully dialed it. So how could Rush possibly know whether or not it takes a nine chevron address to get back from whereever the address they have goes?

Indeed. The only nine chevron address would be to and from the ship. Since its a 9 symbol address to get there, makes sense that it would be a 9 symbol address to get back.

The address is 8 symbols. You're forgetting they have to add the point of origin to the end when they dial it.

I read it as if you have to dial from Destiny to another galaxy you need 9 chevrons so that the receiving gate knows the distance that the wormhole is coming from
