Who's Who on GoT - a guide for newbies

I figured I might not be the only one who has not read the books, and who is a bit overwhelmed by all these families and their relationships among each other. So I figured we could use a thread that provides an overview, and where you can post any questions you have about the characters.

Here's what I have so far. Feel free to add and/or correct. As I said, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this.

Robert Baratheon, King of Westeros. Took the throne from a Targaryan king, and almost wiped out that family since they were responsible for the death of his love, the sister of Ned Stark. Has a son called Joffrey, who is supposed to marry Ned Stark's older daughter. Married to Cersei.

Cersei from the Lannister family has a twin brother called Jaime she's having an incestuous relationship with, and another brother called Tyrion who's a dwarf.

The Lannisters are said to have killed the 'Hand of the King' Jon Arryn, who was married to the sister of Ned Stark's wife Catelyn from the Tully family. They have a son.

Ned and Catelyn Stark have five children, three sons (one of them called Bran) and two daughters, Sansa (who is supposed to marry the King's son) and Arya, who's a real tomboy. Ned also has an illegitimate son called Jon Snow, who lives in his household. Ned has a brother called Benjen who is a member (or even the leader?) of the Night's Watch that guards the wall to the North.

Viserys Targaryen wants to re-take the throne from Robert. To raise an army, he marries off his sister Daenerys to Khal Drogo, lord of a nomadic Dothraki tribe of horsemen.

Ned and Catelyn's oldest is named Robb, and the youngest boy is named Rickon - though knowledge of the latter has come from the pre-release info I checked, but I think the former's was mentioned in the episode itself.

But yeah, good job summarising the basics.

EDIT: Also, I'd recommend we work on a picture to character guide.
~ When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take back the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! WITH THE LEMONS! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that BURNS YOUR HOUSE DOWN! ~

~ Burning people! He says what we're all thinking! ~

Good work so far. Shall we have a seperate picture to character guide thread or shall I post in here?

I was thinking of doing one with character pictures and split up based on which House they belong to. But that's going to take a bit of time.

Good summary so far after one episode. There's an overwhelming amount of characters introduced with more to come!

Unless you want your own thread, go right ahead. Pictures would be very helpful.

I've included some of the more minor characters such as Old Nan and Hodor for completeness, and they were glimpsed in the scene where the King arrives. They'll come to prominence in later episodes. If anyone else wants to do similar posts for groups like the Lannisters, feel free, I shall be away for a few days and with limited internet access, but I'll try and add in more posts with other characters later on if I can.

Wow, great work, thanks! I look forward to finding out how those people we haven't really met yet come into the story.

I'll be gone the second half of this week and all of next week as well, so no rush where I'm concerned.

Of course there are plenty of existing resources, but I started this thread mainly for newbies, where we can introduce the characters as they appear on the show so you're not overwhelmed.

I just remembered another character. The guy who gave the books to Deanerys at her wedding introduced himself as Ser Jorah (sp?) Mormont from Bear Island. He said he served her father, which is strange, because according to the viewer's guide (yes, I did check it out, and thanks for the tip!) his house is allied to the Starks, who are on the current king's side. He may be a spy, because when he said he would always serve 'the rightful king' it was a bit ambiguous.

All the Houses, including the Stark's and the Baratheon's were under Targaryen rule, prior to Robert's Rebellion. So yes, he did serve under Daenery's father, but then technically so did Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon before they killed the previous King.

Jorah Mormont himself is really buttering up Viserys, without wanting to spoil too much
                    Spoiler:
he's not an exile because of any loyalty to the Targaryens

Yup, and what better place to post HBO's own character guide?

Speaking of that I'm surprised that they didn't mention the fact that.

I guess all in due time.

Thanks for the posts and linkage to the HBO site, those breakdowns are really useful. Even reading the books you lose track of characters because there are so many!

The best source for everything, including all the characters, about the TV series in winter-is-coming.net
Another great source is towerofthehand.com , though I wouldn't recommend the site to those who haven't at least read the first book. They a great selection option (for spoilers) for information about the characters, families, locations and the history of the aSoIaF series which can be adjusted by each book.
