Flint's water problems stem from the decline of Detroit and the domestic auto industry. (Free Trade, anyone?) Tax receipts fell through the floor, and the area switched to a cheaper water source to cut spending. This water was not properly treated, and as a result, it allowed an excess amount of lead to leech out from the lead water pipes the system was constructed with way before the hazards of lead were known.

Bottom line is that the city management (Democrats, as I understand it) made poor and in some cases criminally stupid decisions (charges have been filed) about where to spend severely limited financial resources, and these poor decisions ended up with a contamination issue, not a shortage issue.

You need to stop listening to the "intellectual elites" that don't have a clue what is really going on.
Granted, much of Detroit's problems stem from management's disastrously stupid decision to sign off on exorbitant deals with their unions, but the trade deals gave that same management a way to escape the consequences of their stupid decision, without paying the cost with their own careers and jobs. NAFTA and the rest encouraged them so outsource their labor to whatever backwater could do the work the cheapest, gutting the middle class in Michigan.

Do you deny that the automotive industry was primary economic engine of that entire state for much of the 20th century? That fed the working class, paid all their taxes, as well as direct taxation of the big 4 and their suppliers, etc.?

Free Trade was a disaster for the entire manufacturing base in the northeast, but it was particularly devastating for Michigan because of it's dependence upon the auto industry for it's job base. *Afta's killed the golden goose for that state.

There are a few smaller car makers that do everything by hand. But they make dozens of cars a year at an extremely high price (they call it exclusivity), not tens of thousands. A Human workforce cannot keep up with the demand. Not if they want the end product to be affordable.
