The corridor bulkheads didn't look like they were polished, so it seems likely that any kind of hard brittle stone would be able to mark its surface. Erasing stuff would be difficult but he has plenty of wall.

only flaw in that scene is the simplicity of the maths if they had thrown in a few higher level things it would have been great.

Yeah, base 8 would have been pretty neat as a reference. Or even through in the At or another of the consants from that episode.
