Delivered Mason's message, Tommaso realized how much he was tired; the stress of that tragic mission made him really need some rest. He slowly walked to the quarters, whispering a prayer for the souls of his fallen friends and tor the ones of thoe who survived.

A lull had settled over the ship almost from the moment the Lucian Hat'ak had surrended, Sam hadn't replied and she would make them wait. She was about to check on SG1's progress by sending a single 302 into the zone and try and reach them when a Marine escorted a visitor to the bridge who had just this moment ringed onto the Bridge.

"Ma'am, Ishta of the Free Jaffa to see you."

"Thank you Sergeant." Sam replied and left her chair. "Ishta it's so good to see you." She said as she gave the tall woman a quick hug.

"And you Samantha Carter, you are well?"

"As well as, we expected you sooner."

"Yes, we were observing the battle and tried to make haste, then we noted the Mothership jump into hyper-space. We were able to pursue it and I have it's Homeworld location. I expect this would be of significant value."

Sam looked pleased as she smiled at her old friend. "Oh yeah, you bethcha."

Ishta didn't quite understand Sam's reply but returned the smile. "Is there anything else we can be of assistance to you? We were on our way to one of our outposts when we first saw your engagement."

"Yes, there is, if you could wait a short while." Sam tapped her coms. "Colonel Mason, when you can spare a moment, could you come to the bridge please."

"I am in no immediate hurry Samantha." Ishta said.

"Get out of my chair...major." He said curtly, the emotion in his eyes showing the usual mix of annoyance and admiration, though right now it was more annoyance. He had stood up and was now leaning on the desk, their noses all but touched. Connor pulled away before he did something inexcusable like hitting her, or worse. Why and how did she always manage to get under his skin like that. He had his back to her now and she could see his clenched fists as he tried to get himself under control.

"You tell me. I think you're smart enough to figure it all out yourself." He turned around, his face had a calm look: no longer annoyed, but a strange kind of resolved look.

"Our wing's all but gone, Karina. You tell me what I'm supposed to do now, because I sure as frak don't know." He was very close to resigning, he had been opposed to the mission from the start but nobody had listened to him and now he had to deal with this, the result. And Connor wasn't sure he could, not anymore. He'd had a nice career, and if this was The End, then so be it. (He'd been daydreaming of late, about starting up a nice little company on a tropical island somewhere, ferrying tourists around in helicopters. Connor figured it might make a nice bit of money.)

"I'm done with this stuff between us. I'm *done*." He emphasized. He'd moved closer while he spoke and a hand was on her shoulder pulling her close. And then their lips brushed together, completely out of their own it seemed like, and Connor really enjoyed it.

Karina shouldn't have been shocked by his actions...but she was. Her eyes grew wide as his mouth landed squarely on hers sending her back to fall against the soft cushion of the tall winged back chair. But despite her movement their lips stayed in contact and for once she didn't care that he was pursuing her. She let out a muffled moan as she felt the urge to reciprocate and just accept it...after all it was just one kiss....what harm could that do....and it was probably the stress...it meant nothing. These thoughts were racing through her mind as she reached up with her hands gripping each side of his face seemingly to pull him into the embrace. Accepting him for a moment she closed her eyes allowing the warmth of it to take over her then it happened...just as it always did...it hit her and she felt scared.
Her hands dropped to his chest shoving him back violently as her mind switched to panic and a sort of rage...she just couldn't let herself be loved...or become vulnerable. She pulled out of the kiss as if she was now in battle and she drew her fist back and planted it firmly against his jaw with a dull crack. She shook her hand, her chest now heaving to catch her breath. She looked at him horrified regarding the whole incident, "C...Connor... I can't do this!" She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand as she turned away from him choking down the sobs building up in her throat. "Yeah.... I'm DONE with this too!....This.....whatever THIS IS between us!" She lamented as she attempted to escape the room.

Connor wasn't sure when the sweet kiss had turned to pain. Stunned, he sat there, not really sure what had just happened. His jaw hurt like crazy. He was sure it had been broken, it hurt so much. By her fist?!? He couldn't make sense of this, he hadn't been hurting her, this was not a fight, he only knew he had been loving her. Karina's words didn't make sense either. Done? With what? Mason was just too stunned to figure it all out, his head still ringing from that punch.
Unable to say or do anything he let her go (he was just too out of it), let her have her escape... His heart broke as the door slammed closed behind her, wishing he'd had the strength to pull her back in and never let her go. But gone, she was. And she probably wouldn't come back.

Just then though, his comms decided to chirp to life and then a voice came through.

The bridge, in his state, was she kidding. But of course he'd go. He had to. Just to end it all, this was the end, he just had to keep believing that. Connor realised his CO was still waiting for an answer.

"Uh... yes.... ma'am." He hated how weak his voice sounded but what could he do. He'd just been ripped to shreds. "Um. Be... right. There." Now there had definitely been pain in that sound and he winced at himself. He felt his face for blood and was kind of relieved to not find any.

He didn't know how he'd stood up, but he had, he was now upright. He took a few steps, okay, so he could still walk that was a plus. He opened the door, grimaced at the pain, and went outside, his steps more sure with each one. Connor had no idea how he looked (his face was probably bruised and blue) but at that moment he didn't really care anyway. He didn't look at anyone that he might pass, just headed straight to the bridge, as per order.

          ************

When he reached the bridge, Connor saw they had a visitor, the free Jaffa woman stood there talking to Sam. What was her name again, oh yes, Ishta. He respectfully stood back a little, hoping that they wouldn't notice the bruise on his jaw. But a few gasps from the bridge crew around him soon stopped that hope. He ignored them, however, and spoke up to Sam.

"Ma'am? You called me up here." At the very least his voice didn't sound so weak anymore, though there was still pain and well, he just wasn't himself right now.

Tommaso had setted his stereo on random mode and laid on his bed watching the ceiling, trying not to think of all the mistakes he made. He had let his place to the youngest one, and now Violin was dead; he failed to protect his best friend, and now Dragon was missing; he gave the wrong orders, and now Fairie was missing. "Why did I survived, the one that least deserve it?
He looked for consolation in prayers, but even that seemed not to be enough. "I'll have to see Firebucket when this is over....."
Then, like moved by Destiny's hand, the stereo put up a familiar italian song, that Tommaso learnt to play when he was twelve. In spite of his happy music, that was really a sad ballad about a soldier that find his death while running away from it. Without even realizing, he started to sing those words:
"Eri fra la gente nella capitale, so che mi guardavi con malignità,
son scappato in mezzo ai grilli e alle cicale, son scappato via ma ti ritrovo qua...."

Tommaso cried: "Is it really this way?!"

            Spoiler:
Translation: "You were in the crowd in the capital city, I know you were looking with malice at me, I run away among crickets and grasshoppers, I run away but I find you here...."

              Karina "Starbreaker" Thracen

She couldn't move fast enough...down the corridor...holding back her tears, as she fled from him. She felt that familiar swelling of panic rise in her chest as it tightened. She couldn't deal with this pain now...she needed to relax and take the edge off. She headed to her quarters, eyes fixed ahead realizing she was passing people but to her they where just ghosts, she felt dead inside... no one mattered.

She arrived at her room, slamming the hatch behind her not concerned whether she was drawing notice from anyone or not. Now making her way to her locker she rummaged through it retrieving her secret stash of whiskey. Marker's Mark the last of the good stuff until she could manage another un sanctioned booze run. She took a long desperate swig feeling comforted by the deep warm feeling it immediately provided. She stumbled back sitting onto her bed wiping away the remnants of the drink now mixing with a lone tear that managed to trickle down to her lips. "Ahhhh!!....now that's more like it!" She reveled in her false security and muted feelings as she sat for a while drinking away her troubles. Finally she was numb...she took another long draw off the bottle and fell back onto her bed. Laying there a moment ...looking up...deciding that things may have started moving on their own she fell quiet....and then she could hear it.....was that Italian singing?

"Italian is that you??" She seemingly asked...yelling at the wall and then giggled at the thought of it. She just had to check....cuz really his voice was begging an audience...and well she had the refreshments.

She took another gulp for the road as she stood....the room beginning to sway without her, her legs feeling a bit wobbly. She stammered out into the corridor making her way towards the Captains room....she didn't even bother knocking...she busted in through the hatchway...not even considering the consequences of what she would see once inside. "Uhhhhhh ....ello talian ....da stallion...... " her mouth finding difficultly forming words properly. She staggered in waving her bottle around.....stopping to take another gulp and then attempting to continue...."Iz dat Uu.... doin....dat.....dat.....singin....thang?" She wavered around almost ready to fall as she grabbed onto the chair by his desk.. "Don cha....wan.....na.......a..u...di...nce...??" she queried out as intelligently as she could manage. She seemingly tripped and sat down next to him on the bed..... "...Hhhere..." she handed him the whiskey bottle offering to share..... "Tthis....mighnt halp ya.....jusnta lil" She pulled up her hand attempting to give him the "small" sign with her thumb and fore finger all while she was peeking through her fingers and giggling playfully.

Before he could accept the whiskey from her she quickly indulged again with another gulp....this one sending her falling back on the bed huffing out... ."Oooohhh don cha....min me...... jus kept .....on...... singin." She got quiet and her eyes sort of glazed over a bit as she laid there absorbing the feeling and spinning in her own self made misery.
