I think, they just have not put that much thought into that, becaise the Wraith are supposed to be the bad ones, the less you know about them actually the easier it is to dislike them for what you know.
But another question is why do they actually lose the ability to eat like humans, I mean it would be much more wise to have both options in times of the one or the other being rare. But that I guess would belong to another thread
I think you answered your question about eating human foods in your first sentence.
If, on the other hand, Ancients deliberately create the Wraith it would explain why they have to be kind of cannibalistic. The Ancients invented useless weapons like the exploding tumour machine so Wraith were the result of another experiment gone wrong.
Exactly so! The Ancients did some terribly stupid things along the way. They are more similar to humans than they would like to admit, apparently.
Could be so, but it is very unsatisfying..so many things left unexplained and unexplored
And so many missed chances for even greater storylines. But that's the problem with such a specialised fandom: The TV episodes are far too short to delve more deeply into the culture of an alien species and TPTB rather fill the limited time with action and focus on the main protagonists. Of course we can't blame them, they've still done an excellent job with entertaining us, even for years after the show ended.
There should be a new Stargate series where the Wraith are the main protagonists, then we could see such questions solved, like the one this thread is about and others, would be nice I think

Star Trek managed to delve into alien cultures but then, it wasn't a show where the main characters had to run around with guns every week.

Well i think they can created them by accident. Iratus bug is native of Pegas yes. Before Anciencts and people, they must have feed on something else but not so "strong" and more complex DNA with capabilities of changing and evolving much faster. From what we now about Wraith feeding proces, they make them a bit stronger (remember Ford ?) So i think they tried to find maybe cure for their plague from which they run away from MW by mixing Ancient DNA with DNA capabilities of Iratus bug ... But as the years passes the humans started to change a become stronger ... Some of them didn't change for example Tayla's people (if u remember she however still has a Wraith DNA and some skills) other that started to change realized that they become more powerful than average human or Ancient. Well remember how easily was Tayla changed to Wraith Queen. I think that was done thanks to that DNA ...
But without everything what i wrote with classic brain and what we saw in serials, we know that some of humans have Wraith DNA. So they did experimented with Wraith/Iratus DNA without knowing what they created ...
