It was purely for story telling; they needed an example of 'making the right decision'.

I think the LA are much more likely to gain beaming tech from something Anubis left behind.
And it is not the beaming tech , it is the advance Asgard sensor , Anubis 's beam need some locator signal to lock on someone.

There's not detector for brainwashing. So with time the entire crew can be brain washed, or only the technicians down on Earth who would be easy prey when they go home. It's impossible to determine the extend of the Lucian Alliance's reach. Just like Ball's network of agents. They could be everywhere and anywhere.

They use a device similar to Goa'uld memories device, but it compare the conscious memories and the unconscious memories. And check for inconsistence .
But it wasn't very reliable.
For example, Sam 's feeling for Jack , and her refusal to admit it .the machine interpret her result as brainwash victim.
After a decade perhaps the To'kra has prefected it.
May be it is about time to use the Tok'ra detector.
In real life, government worker, or defence contractor , and military require to get t polygraph session. People fail the test could lose their securiity clearance.
A polygraph is not reliable and not admissable in court. But US governement still use it for security reason.
People fail may not be because they are guilty , may be for some other reason as well.
Like in "Medium", ALison 's husband fail the test , because when he was ask if he notice anything strange in his life.( or some question like it) .
His wife talk to dead people, but he can't tell people about it.

I wouldn't have had a problem with Carter not beaming them back if it wasn't for the fact that, she did exactly that in the first episode didn't she? I thought that was a little weird."First Weir, then Samantha Carter, and now, you! It's a pity you humans die or get reassigned so easily, or I might have a sense of satisfaction now!"
*You got the touch! You got the poweeeeer!*
"Arise, Woolseyus Prime."
"Elizabeth..."
