The planet was a resort planet for the aliens who created it to stay at for a nice relaxing holidays from their stress-filled lives. The obelisk is actually a burglar alarm. The ones who stayed behind are going to get arrested by resort security and charged with illegal trespassing and squatting and spending time in jail.
