    SG-1 Actor News & Appearances (Non-Stargate)

Please post in this thread for actor news, appearances, non-Stargate TV and film roles, and other news regarding actors who have appeared on Stargate SG-1!

This thread is specifically for non-Stargate related projects from our favorite actors. Fan conventions, upcoming talk shows where it's reasonable to expect they'll talk about Stargate belong in their own threads (or the appropriate existing thread).

    Thanks!

New relationship comedy at SCR misses mark

                  By PAUL HODGINS
                  THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER
                  Published: April 4, 2010

"You mourn ideas, not people," Mary complains to her frustrating husband, George, near the beginning of Julia Cho's new play, "The Language Archive."

Mourning languages is George's business. He's a linguist who specializes in recording obscure tongues before they disappear entirely. "There are 6,500 languages in the world. More than half are expected to die in the next century," we are told.

George is too busy attending to the herculean task of preserving them in tape-recorded amber to notice that his marriage is dying, too. And when the time comes to save it, George, a man who knows how to say "I love you" in countless languages dead and living, is at a loss for words. He seems literally tongue-tied.

...Cho overstates her thematic point by introducing two characters whose inability to get along will mean the demise of their language. Alta and Resten (Linda Gehringer and Tony Amendola), an elderly couple, are the last remaining speakers of Ellowan, a strange tongue of indeterminate origin. George has flown them to his lab so he can record them.

Unfortunately, the crusty pair has endured a bad flight. Resten was an armrest hog; worse, he took the window seat without asking his wife if she wanted it. Their pique blooms into a nasty argument which ends in an ancient Ellowan curse. Neither one will talk to the other. George's project is doomed.

... The mélange never gels, the tone waffles, and you're left with the sneaking feeling that the playwright needs a rewrite or two to work things out. Why, for example, do Alta and Resten largely disappear in the second act? And why is Mary aware of George's direct addresses to the audience?

... Veterans Gehringer and Amendola manage to rise above Gypsy caricature as Alta and Resten, especially as we learn more about the Ellowan couple and realize their fighting is surface noise obscuring deep underlying love. Each performer also does well with other small but crucial roles.

Brokaw, like Cho, struggles with tone. The director seems unsure at times how to calibrate scenes on the serious-to-light scale.

That problem will disappear only when Cho decides how to make the comedy work in a play whose subjects tend to defy laughter.
