Your take on the climate change/More fairy tales from Al Gore

Mr Gore told the conference: “These figures are fresh. Some of the models suggest to Dr [Wieslav] Maslowski that there is a 75 per cent chance that the entire north polar ice cap, during the summer months, could be completely ice-free within five to seven years.”

However, the climatologist whose work Mr Gore was relying upon dropped the former Vice-President in the water with an icy blast.

“It’s unclear to me how this figure was arrived at,” Dr Maslowski said.

Perhaps Mr Gore had felt the need to gild the lily to buttress resolve. Hell if he didn't do this half the delegates at Copenhagen would walk off laughing. But his speech was roundly criticised by members of the climate science community. “This is an exaggeration that opens the science up to criticism from sceptics,” Professor Jim Overland, a leading oceanographer at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.

If the evidence was solid, he wouldn't have to "exagerate" to win the debate.

Poor Al Gore he has to lie to sell his version of the truth.

Gore needs to eat a few more hamburgers so he won't be able to go to any more conferences!

Incorrect. Global warming and cooling are natural processes that occur in cycles - they are not hoaxes. The current concern is of enhanced global warming. It is that element that there remains debate surrounding. Despite the fact that the evidence suggests that there IS an exacerbated level of warming taking place.

How far apart are these cycles? Because we have only been measuring the weather for a few decades, no?

If so, who is to say that every 10,000 years or so accelerated Climate change doesn't take place? Who is to say that we are not experiencing a normal accelerated change this time around?

Direct study of meteorological conditions is not the same as climate research. It's quite simple (relatively) to gain an understanding of climate patterns through millenia from icecore and geological samples.

What do said samples show over the past ten thousand years?

It doesn't really matter if changes in climate are natural or created by humans. It is sort of important for us to preserve the climate as is to ensure the survival of the human race. Climate changes are natural events but they generally lead to quite a few extinctions. We shouldn't care if changes in the climate are natural or unnatural. If they cause droughts, rising sea levels, and extreme weather then they're a danger to us and we should do what we can to prevent it in order to preserve our own civilization.

That doesn't make any sense, unless you're referring specifically to Al Gore, which doesn't really have anything to do with my question. I was asking what the motive was for every country on the planet fabricating a theory to fool the world into thinking man made climate change is real, at great economic loss to each of the countries involved yet with seemingly no gain. Historically conspiracy theories have been invented when people are faced with a reality they don't want to accept, I feel that this is just another of those occasions. No one wants to come to terms with the fact that their lifestyle is destroying their habitat, so when heavily biased pseudo-science paid for my corporations set to lose millions comes floating their way telling them they have nothing to worry about and that it's all just a hoax they jump all over it, despite the obvious absurdity of it all. Man made climate change is real, if it weren't, or if there were even a sliver of reasonable doubt then there isn't a chance in hell leaders from around the world would be taking it so seriously, let alone ones from countries like China and Russia, who have so much to lose economically, their mere involved only serves to highlight how serious the situation must really be.

That there are periods of time where massive (gradual) warming occurs, followed by massive (gradual) cooling, and so on so forth. The planet gets really hot, then cools down, we get an ice age, and then it gets hot again. That is not in question, except for idiots that just dismiss climate change out of hand - even 'educated' climate change deniers accept this part.

What people are worried about is that we have exacerbated the warming. All we need is for the global temperature to raise in average by 2 degrees celcius and we're effectively screwed. It is in this area that there is a debate. Much like there was a debate about CFCs causing a hole in the Ozone layer. Funnily enough, we cut back on CFC emissions, and the OZone started repairing itself. I'm no geographer or climate change specialist, but from what I understand, in the short amount of time since society became industrialised there have been notable increases in temperature beyond the accepted rate.
