Does this include series of books? For example, The Belgariad by David Eddings is actually 5 books. Fans generally refer to the series not the individual book.

I'll give it a shot, and name the obvious contenders:
        1. The Silmarillion (JRRT)
        2. The Hobbit (JRRT)
        3. The Lord of the Rings (JRRT)
        4. The Chronicles of Narnia (CS Lewis) -- in particular, the Pevensie stories
        5. Star Wars IV-VI (George Lucas)
        6. The Dark Tower I-III (Stephen King)
        7. The Stand (Stephen King) -- not sure if this counts, but it is a good vs. evil fantasy
        8. ?
        9. ?
        10. ?

Sorry, I'm a little choosy when it comes to heroic fantasy

O.k we can do series. I first thought the individual books, because in some series the books can be of different quality. But maybe series is better.

the thing about the belgariad and mallorian, they're so tightly written that it's really hard to read one without the others.

for example, i tried to read book 1 of the mallorian, and just couldn't get into it, until i read teh belgariad first.

I think it'd be like reading return of the king without reading the first book.

Don't know either. High fantasy should take place in an secondary world. The Stand is is set in the primary world right? If the others think it should be in, than i'll put it in.

Star Wars is awesome, but it's science fiction not fantasy i think.

                        2. Harry Potter series by JK Rowling? ( Just to throw it in there)

I can't think of anymore, other than those that've been already suggested...

Aside from what's there, I guess I could add The Elenium and Tamuli series by David Eddings. Like the Belgariad and Malloreon they go together.
